yes, but the main poor business decision was changing their name from Dixie to Faubourg. that was the moment they put the gun to their own head and pulled the trigger. whether or not they "went woke" is a matter of interpretation.

How do you figure that was the main poor business decision? They had to sell the company before they changed the name of the beer. To me that would imply things weren't going so swimmingly.

Keep ignoring and rationalizing away the obvious. People called it the moment it was announced the name was changed. The name change was 70% of its downfall.

What did they actually buy beyond that, though?

Ehh, they were sort of poised to be our regional version of Rainier, Lone Star, Narragansett, etc. Beers that people buy for nostalgia sake more than because they love the beer. Keep the old name and labels, and make something simply passable as far as drinking, and profit accordingly. You would never be huge nationwide, but you have a ready-made niche that could continue basically forever. Oh well.

Maybe but seems like the nostalgia for Dixie was pretty far gone to begin with. Really don’t remember seeing anyone under 40 (my age bracket) drinking Dixie before Gayle so nothing to be nostalgic about

They did not sell until well after. The name change decision was made in 2020 and the sale to Down by the Water did not occur until September of 2022.

The anti-drinking movement is HUGE in certain parts of the country.

I'd guess that about 30% of my adult friend group (loosely using the term here to capture a larger group of people) has recently given up drinking for health reasons.

You're so full of shite.

Heckin' shite

There’s probably an argument that they were too far out from Katrina, which basically killed them, when the sale went through. They weren’t doing great at that point, but it was still a name.

Plays a part. Younger people are taking a gummy instead of drinking (see yesterday’s THC thread). Also, beer gotten too big (too many breweries) and cost of doing business has gotten too expensive for some. Not the first and not the last brewery to close. Brieux Carré Brewing Co. was recently asking for donations.

Wow, a lot of stuff there that I had no idea about. Crazy shite.

It wasn’t “wokeness.”

You sure about that?
I bought Dixie beer.
When they changed the name I said "never again".

Ah. This whole time I blamed Gayle for changing the name

Many of us are adamant that we look and feel better and will likely never be regular drinkers again. Granted, this is a group that includes my pickleball crowd and group class crowds at Lifetime Fitness

Still.... Not a good time for craft brewers, of which there are many.

When the craft brewery spigot first opened (at least to me anyway) it was a wonder to behold! Try everything! Seek out Ghost in the Machine, Envié, Jucifer, et al.
Fast forward 10 years and you just see a mosaic wall of a hundred different brands and types, and quickly scan for the handful that you recognize.
So IMO market oversaturation is a factor.

Back in the day, I drank Dixie because it was a Louisiana product and actually bought a few packs of Picayune cigarettes.

I miss neither.

And the free money spigot of low interest loans has been turned off.

A lot of breweries without an actual, you know, business plan have gone tits up.
