You can really understand where some of the holes in logic are when Mickey decides to talk.
He stated that he generally really trade down because the player he'd ultimately get isn't as good as the one he'd take at the original spot. That's a blocker for him. Certainly, there's a scenario where getting multiple players of a lesser level could be better for this team, right? He can't even comprehend that.
You can see it in his 2nd answer where someone talks about getting a 3rd and/or 4th round pick and he has already eliminated the possibility of trading down in the 2nd to accomplish that. He says they would consider that Friday night (after the 3rd round.)
That's a problem.
Another thing of note is that, more than in the past, he' acting like he's running the draft...even to the point where he says, "sure we value the input of the coaches".
I also think that's a problem. Nobody should want Mickey Loomis making decisions.

He definitely is open to moving into the Top 10. He must've mentioned it 6 times (albeit vaguely). It's like he has a credit card with next year's picks burning a hole in his pants.
When I clicked on the vid, I wondered if he would mention trading up to around 10, where many mocks have Olu Fashanu or Talise Fuagua going to the Jets. Then he specifically gave an example of jumping up to the 10th spot.
But also I can't believe positional need would not be a factor, as he adamantly stated it isn't. You can't convince me, that if the Saints did trade up into the Top 10, that OT would not be the pick.

Loomis should have zero input on personnel evaluation (which begs the question of why is he the GM in the first place). He's not, nor has ever been a talent evaluator. He's an accountant.
He's also telling the league what the league already knows...he's dying to sign up for that new credit card and move up in the draft...no matter how bad the interest rate may be on the card.
On the other hand, Howie Roseman is sitting in Philly trying to figure out a way to sell Loomis a metallic pea family truckster by convincing Loomis it drives as well as a Ferrari. I'm sure that call goes something like this "Hey Mickey. It's Howie. I'm not a Christian, but I've always heard it's WAY more fun to open your Christmas presents on Christmas Eve. Is that true? Oh, let me try to figure out a way to get you that G6 prospect you want at #8"

I suspect that "we" includes Jeff Ireland, who seems to have a ton of pull. And I certainly don't want a short-timer like DA making the final call on who we draft. Gail is comfortable with Loomis running things for her, and his job is safe even if DA flames out this season. He can think long-term, hopefully.

This reasoning only works if you're proven to be good at drafting, and their regime has not. 2017 was 7 years ago.
That's why it's important to accumulate as many picks as possible to ride the wave of variance.

Gayle does. All this criticism of Mickey misses the mark. Our in over her head owner is decorating the cafeteria this summer while personnel and he cap situation has the Saints rotting from within.
