Do you ever layup/hit into the rough intentionally for a softer lie?

I was thinking about this while practicing today. I’ve realized that I’m very comfortable with a wedge shot between 35-60 yds if it’s in a fluffy lie, but if it’s in the fairway or tight lie I’m toast, 50% chance of a chunk/thin shot. My two thoughts were
1. Try to never leave myself this shot, be closer or further when laying up
2. When I do need to layup or hit to this distance for whatever reason, try and hit it into the rough for a fluffier lie.

I did whenever I first started playing and didn't know yet that it's not a good idea to try to help the ball into the air with your irons/wedges. But also, when I first started playing, I was aiming for the golf course from the tee and I was lucky if I found my ball in the rough.
Those shorter shots that you mentioned, from the fairway, are now my favorite shot in golf. When I struggled with that distance, the majority of the time it was because I was decelerating just before the point of impact and trying to control the distance that way. I now use the clock system (not sure what the technical term is) and let my backswing dictate the distance on those shots. Mentally, it frees me up to attack the ball on the downswing and avoid those thin or chunky shots.

If the rough is healthy, but short, I often prefer it. That is often the case at Oakwing and Links on the Bayou. The Fall can get dicey when the rough thins out letting the ball fall down to the ground.

50% chance of duffing off a fairway lie at 50 yards aren't very good odds. I'd get a lesson rather than hoping I hit it in to the rough and the ball somehow sits on top of a nice fluffy lie.
I get the sentiment. I've only recently dialed in my wedges to where I feel confident that I won't chunk or thin a 50 yarder. Before that I distinctly remember laying up to try to get 100-110 yds to the green cause that was my smooth easy gap wedge shot distance.

No.
If you continue to chunk shot shots, it could be your bounce on the wedges.

I have no sand game.....so if there is an option to aim away from a bunker but I may end up in some rough.....I chose rough every time.

Not really.
My dispersion would put me in the tree line or OB if I tried to land in 7 yards of first cut.
Consider looking at some other options in wedges (bounce, grind, etc)

I’ve aimed for bunkers before, and if I tug it a hair or catch a flyer it’ll end up good. It punched out for bunkers and if it ramps out on to the green then great

If I was good enough to aim for the rough and hit it I’m probably good enough to hit a wedge on the green from 50 yards.
I get the idea, but it seems like you’re bringing in a lot of trouble potentially. OB, Awful lies, hanging tree branches, etc.

It’s all fun and games till you catch a flier out the rough.
I try to play boring golf. Drive, approach, 4 putt…. Move on to next hole.

Depends on alot but there are times I will hit away from areas that may give me a bad lie with a short shot into a green even if it means I am in the rough.
Not that I am intentionally hitting into the rough but if my miss right leaves he 40 into the in from hard pan with possible tree roots and missing left leaves me 40 yards out of the rough, I will try to miss left.
It's really just course course management.

Do you have the correct bounce on your wedges for your swing? I had this same issue, then did a wedge fitting and it was night and day different. no more chunks.

I'm surprised no one questioned what bounce you are working with on that wedge. High bounce may not be doing you any favors on tight lies. As I understand it, preventing the leading edge from getting under the ball; very little margin for error. But is buttery out of the fluffy stuff.

this is why I typically dont go below my 50d in the fairway. I leave the 58 only for short-sided delicate shots. I'll step down to the 54 in the fairway if I absolutely have to have a bit more spin.

Keep the center of your chest moving towards the target. That eliminates the chunk or thin shot. Don't try and help the ball up either.
