Obscure “hair band” that is actually a good rock band? One of the ones I’m thinking of…

Stellar call but I'm extremely biased ... Scott Dalhover's signature pickup pickup is a Carondelet Turbobucker.

Here's that pickup in action ...

Dangerous Toys & "Tin Boots" live in Austin Aug 2003

Excellent call on TNT as well - one of my all time favorite melodic rock bands.

Dangerous Toys is playing a show in Dallas next month at the Granada opening for Armoured Saint. I’m thinking about going to this.

I'm not sure what you actually mean. Basically all the hair bands could play - are you talking about technical expertise?

The men are separated from the boys on songwriting - and Dangerous Toys does NOT pass the test.

I'm not sure there were any "obscure" hair acts that had really good songwriting that somehow went unnoticed.

Stone Fury. One album, but then Lenny Wolf went on to front Kingdom Come

They're not obscure, but they are a great rock band that gets unfairly lumped in with hair metal:

Tesla.

Y&T. Summertime Girls was their big hit, but an earlier album, Mean Streak, was phenomenal. Dave Meniketti played lead guitar and also lead vocals.

Also throw in Krokus. Screaming in the Night is still in my regular rotation

Tyketto:
They came along just a bit too late but they were incredible. If they would’ve been a couple of years earlier they probably would’ve been huge but the emergence of grunge swallowed them up.

Sweet F.A.:
More of a personal favorite. I wore the crap out of their first album. Not sure how big or well known they could’ve been….again, the grunge thing happened….but they were a bit more rooted in the blues than just a “hey, hey baby tonight…come on” group of hairspray drenched screamers and the groups that had a strong presence of blues in their stuff are the hair metal bands I gravitated towards.

Kings X. Somewhat obscure. Criminally underrated.

I could write a thesis on "obscure hair bands" that were excellent either for their musicianship or songwriting.

Off the top of my head:

Vain
Kik Tracee
King of the Hill
Leatherwolf
Racer X
(as previously mentioned) TNT
Lillian Axe
Rough Cutt
Babylon A.D.
Every Mother's Nightmare
Shotgun Messiah
Love\Hate
Little Ceasar
Junkyard
Shark Island
Tora Tora
Blue Murder
