My summer job while studying Frat at LSU was 70 days straight doing engine room maintenance on tugboats run out of the Exxon Docks. But I was usually somewhere on The Ohio or Mississippi Rivers. I worked a 12-hour shift in the engine room. There were no soy dispensers.

I worked there for 32 years in operations. No backstabbing at that level. Wasn’t really any reason for it being unionized. However, my daughter is an engineer and it’s very competitive between them. It’s like a contest in that nobody wants to be the first to go home each day. Many operators when I first started were overtime hogs and would almost live out there. I could see that was changing with the younger generations where they preferred their off time. Just my 2 cents.

typically the larger the plant, the bigger the shite show. It's a really big plant.

When I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, my step-father lived a block off of Hollywood Street in NBR. The refinery smells gave me headaches almost every other visit to my mom and step-Dads residence. My head would pound and I lived on BC powders.

That's one of the strongest memories I have of Baton Rouge in that time frame. Every single time we would go into BR on the newly constructed 110 from our home in BFE E. Feliciana to visit relatives all over town, the rotten egg skunk fart smell that permeated everything near Exxon was never more noxious than in the Governors Mansion curves.

I work in the refinery. It’s really what you make of it. OT is strictly unit dependant. The unit I’m in has more OT than most. Sucks at times but having a family and raising kids are expensive so there are two ways you can look at that. Work is work but I feel there are more days that we have little to do than busier days.

The only thing I know about the engineering side is most of the time-their education level far exceeded their level of intelligence

90% of engineers fit this description. I'm currently a plant operator...hoping to change that soon.
