not in the aspect, but yes- I would be there for someone who was contemplating suicide.

A very good friend of mine from college committed suicide in '94 so I tend to be sensitive to those who are dealing with those kind of intrusive thoughts.

I didn't live comfortably when I was working. Two kids, house payment, car payment, and 401K. Paid for two kids college. But when they left the nest, times have been good. Life is good if you plan for it.

“ "Comfortable" is defined as the monthly income needed to cover a 50/30/20 budget, which allocates 50% of your earnings for necessities like housing and utility costs, 30% for discretionary spending and 20% for savings or investments.”

So 80k would be roughly $4500/mo after taxes etc which means you'd need to handle all of your necessities on $2250/mo. That's stretching it, even in BR unless you want to live somewhere you might get shot.

2250
-1200 rent
-400 food
-400 vehicle
- 150 utilities
- 70 cell
- 70 internet
- 150 insurance
- 150 gas

You are already negative, and we aren't even talking about a mortgage on a modest place which would be more than $1200. Who considers themselves "comfortable" as a perpetual renter?

I'm not saying you can't live on 80k, you absolutely can. but you'll be spending more than 50% on necessities and eating into discretionary and savings. I could live on less for sure, but that's not the premise of the article.

I make enough to live comfortably but that's offset by enough debt to make me extremely uncomfortable.

My strategy now has been reduced to using my alleged and highly dubious masculine charms to seduce a rich octogenarian with no heirs. We will reminisce about her favorite episode of Lawrence Welk, and I'll be super-handy in helping her locate her dentures. The first date I'll take her to the early bird special. The second date will be to the notary public to get that last will and testament amended.

It makes a big difference to have 2 incomes with today's cost of living unless you are a high earner. Marrying a rich widow would work too

I bought my first house in 2006 at 25 years old and had a $1500 mortgage on a $200,000 house. What kinda house could you buy for 50k?

1,400 square foot shot gun, starter home for us. Only one owner, the people that built it. Again, I’m in the woods in SE Louisiana. I know that’s not the case for most people, even 19 years ago.

Maybe you should focus on other things like a woman who shares your interests and values. Maybe you should look for someone of good character that you can trust to stick around long term.

I max out 401k and me and wife's Roth. No debt other than house. No car notes, etc.

But 4-5 years ago I also saved a ton more monthly. Now I'm pretty much maxed out by the end of the month.

Inflation has vastly out paced salary increases for me. Once youngest is in elementary, wife mag go back to work which will help.

Depends on how comfortable we are talking. Right now I wouldn’t want to be single making 80k and trying to buy a house with these interests rates.

The more I make the more I spend and it’s been that way for 20 years??. Not sure I’ll ever be 100% comfortable.

Seriously though, you look back even 5-10 years and sometimes wonder how you were making it.

I am extremely blessed and am not rich, monetarily, by any means but, as a single man in BR, live comfortably. I’m also a perpetual renter and have no desire to own a home.

I can understand that. I just don't think it's the norm for a majority of people. I think most would prefer to own their place before retirement.

No maintenance cost sounds nice at times.
