Flying thru DCA tomorrow morning. Very small/congested airport. Mainline jets use the one N/S runway, Regionals can generally use the two cross runways. Mainline jets are talking to Ground Control while they cross the two crossing runways.

Sounds to me like the controllers were at fault here for clearing SW to cross while simultaneouslyl clearing the JB flight to takeoff. In my cockpit we always turn our lights on and look both ways before crossing to make sure there's not a plane taking off/landing, but sometimes it's hard to tell if they are busy and lining up planes to take off while you're crossing.

End of the day, it's been a long time since we've had an accident. The system works really well until that one shitty day when it doesn't.

I was kind of wondering if this wouldn't be something a pilot would normally do.

Probably a dumb question, but why not have controlled signals where taxiways cross runways? Basically if the tower releases a plane to take off the cross lights are red.

Probably too simple.
