They are intentionally going very slowly. The idea is that it’s an utterly unique site, and excavation technology is constantly advancing. So, if they excavate all at once, we could forever “ruin” the site, even though it would sate immediate curiosity. But if we do a small segment at a time, over the course of decades, we likely don’t lose much, and we potentially leave portions pristine for when we have further developed technology.

My daughter did a current events article about a company that’s developed tech to scan scrolls without unrolling them and they were able to scan a bunch of data off scrolls that were otherwise too brittle to unroll and examine.
