as many of us have said, regardless of whether Matt House did a competent job or not, the main difference between Perkins being more of a disruptor as a FR compared to his SO season was the opponent knew who he was.
It’s not really that simple. Teams knew who he was when he was the talk of CFB as a freshman. They definitely were aware of him in their game plan, but there’s not a whole lot you can do against someone that disruptive of a pass rusher. The spy role is also something that you can’t really game plan against.
That can pass as a good excuse if they actually tried to use him in that role to begin his sophomore year. They didn’t even try to rush him against FSU. Hard to say it won’t work when you don’t even attempt it.
One thing you can tell, it wasn’t “fun” for him. He didn’t give much effort and you did not see the explosiveness on constant display. That is all due to him not caring at that point. He was going through the motions.

Also was in a role that required more than instinctive reaction. Slowed him and others down. Another sign of bad coaching when schemes weren’t adjusted based on player grasp and skill sets.

That’s easy to plan against. If you know someone is in the spy role it simplifies the coverages and makes game planning easier for the offense. The reason you do it is because the deadly running QBs usually can’t take advantage of the simplified zones because they are one-read-and-run guys. The reason Daniels didn’t see a lot of spies is because he is a real QB who can also run.

I doubt that he "didn't care", or had given up... it is far more likely that the scheme was too complex and he had to think, rather than read and react. If you hesitate to think, you are already beat.
