Merril Hoge sees Drake Maye as “the kind of player that will get you fired”

Chris Simms has placed Maye at No. 6 in his quarterback rankings, behind Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., and J.J. McCarthy.
Former ESPN analyst and NFL fullback Merril Hoge has similar views on Maye.
Via AthlonSports.com, Hoge recently said the Maye could cost whoever drafts him their job.
“Drake Maye is the kind of player that will get you fired,” Hoge said in an interview on WCCO radio. “Especially if you draft him in the top five or top three, he’s going to get you fired.”
Hoge compared Maye to 2021 rookie Malik Willis, who had been the betting favorite to be the first quarterback taken and who ended up falling to the Titans in round three. At best, he’ll be No. 2 in Tennessee this year.
“Willis might be the only guy that I can think of that is as erratic as Maye,” Hoge said. “I studied him for two years. . . . I watched every one of his games last year. . . . His last game against [North Carolina State] was probably the most embarrassing display I’ve seen from a guy who is supposed to be an elite franchise quarterback. . . . He’s erratic. He’s everywhere.”
Hoge also has concerns about Maye’s ability to use his athleticism in a way that will keep him healthy.
“People think his athleticism will translate but people want him to run and they will bust him up,” Hoge said. “He is not athletic enough. If he doesn’t get down and learn how to do that, he won’t last until Week 10.”

Hoge also isn’t particularly impressed with Caleb Williams.
quote:
"First of all, his ability to throw on the run is very disturbing," Hoge said. "It is very inaccurate and it's all over the place. There's a ton of RPO, which nobody is going to RPO themselves to a Super Bowl in our league. ... You gotta push the ball down the field. There are times when he does that. He doesn't play with a lot of anticipation because of all the clean pockets that exist for him.
"The thing that's disturbing me right now is his inability to be consistent on the move as a thrower. And he's willing to do that a lot more than he has to. You don't have that choice in our league. ... I don't see anything magical with his arm.
"From a pocket presence, he is not special," Hoge said. "He has a gift that everybody thinks is exciting and special and that is his unique mobility. That's not going to win you championships and being exciting is not a skillset."

Hoge has had some pretty good QB Draft analysis over the past few years. He has been spot on with a few as I recall

Couldn't agree more. Maye is absolute pyrite. He'll bust.

So who does he like? Daniels?

Maye's output never matched his hype. He may be a robo QB.

Maye Caleb and Daniels all have a bit of bust potential to each.

Pointing out his inconsistency, his lack of accuracy is a strong point.
Pretending he doesn't have elite arm talent is a strange point to make.
Something about Maye has resulted in him performing below where you would expect him to for significant periods of time. Some games don't make sense.
But, I'd draft him 3rd. I wouldn't even consider Penix or Nix before him.
I do agree that there's risk with this pick.

People are going to clown him, but Hoge lives on tape and is usually able to divorce himself from the draft hype bullshite generated by agents and the media.

So he is the next Tom brady

Didn't he hate Josh Allen as well?

His rant about Johnny Football was dead accurate leading up to the 2014 draft. I remember him saying that he didn’t like Zach Wilson as well on the radio during his draft process.

He has a pretty good track record w/this. He's a film rat.

For as many QBs that are predicted to go early, I think it’s entirely plausible that absolutely none of them end up being a top guy when it’s all said and done. Seems like a ton of risk with all of them.

To be fair, Hoge hates everyone, always has. He was always the Debbie Downer on ESPN.

I have friends who think Drake Maye will be a star, which I never have a clue why they keep saying this when he wasn't that special in college. Yet he's gonna somehow be an NFL star.
I'll go with the professional here. I agree dude will be an absolute bust.

Most potential in the class and nobody else is a can’t miss at the position.

I think Maye needs to go to a team that is willing to bring him along slow. He has the tools just needs good coaching which I think he got at UNC. But he won't. He will get thrown in the fire and will go down the same road as Trubisky.

This is a dated take.
30/34 Mahomes completions in the Super Bowl were under 10 yards. Brock Purdy wasn’t firing the ball down the field either.
Tackling is so bad in football at all levels teams don’t need to push the ball deep down the field.
