Why do people think a private business must offer a "livable wage" to anyone? Why is it the obligation of the business to pay a "livable wage" to anyone?
I don't disagree with your overall point.
But there is a counter argument that has some merit. For example, you have the CEO of a Company who makes millions of dollars/year mostly on the backs of employees who live below the poverty line. In order for those employees to sustain/and show up for work, they get government assistance. So indirectly, the government (your tax dollars) is subsidizing the CEO's multi-million dollar salary. It's complex issue that I don't pretend to have an answer for but I do recognize it for what it is.

Hell, we are subsidizing their employees in a lot of cases, directly through our taxes.
They are making over $20 an hour right now, the only difference is right now their employee pays them $16 an hour and we pay the rest. Now their employee will pay $20 and we will pay the rest (which should reduce our burden somewhat)
