‘They’ haven’t had the same opportunities as you and it’s unfair. If you say frick em, you’re a white supremacist…not just an a-hole.

I don't totally disagree, however inflation and CoL have risen at a disproportionate rate to pay (and I'm not just talking about min wage), so "getting a degree" (even a legit/viable one) doesn't guarantee you anything in terms of livable pay.

But seriously...other than some "social equity" bullshite answer and "it's for the greater good" moral position...why should it be an employers obligation instead of the individuals obligation to better themselves?

Because now that there are wage slaves instead of actual slaves, they gotta make sure they can afford food/shelter since it isn't free.

Do this many people on the OT actually care about what cali does with min wage or is this the daily poli talk radio talking point nationwide or something?

Cali going from $16 to $20 registers a big nothing on my list of things to give a frick about over here in Louisiana.

Why do people think a private business must offer a "livable wage" to anyone? Why is it the obligation of the business to pay a "livable wage" to anyone?

I don't disagree with your overall point.

But there is a counter argument that has some merit. For example, you have the CEO of a Company who makes millions of dollars/year mostly on the backs of employees who live below the poverty line. In order for those employees to sustain/and show up for work, they get government assistance. So indirectly, the government (your tax dollars) is subsidizing the CEO's multi-million dollar salary. It's complex issue that I don't pretend to have an answer for but I do recognize it for what it is.

Hell, we are subsidizing their employees in a lot of cases, directly through our taxes.

They are making over $20 an hour right now, the only difference is right now their employee pays them $16 an hour and we pay the rest. Now their employee will pay $20 and we will pay the rest (which should reduce our burden somewhat)

100% complete opposite. Back in the day only a dad needed to work 1 job and mom stayed at home. It's today that both sexes work and sometimes multiple jobs, but I know those over 50 years older as they descend into end of life can't help but have the view "Eherhrrrr backkk in muhhrr dehr everyone was working for $2 an hour including me and my brother while we were still in the womb"

Came across a funny article that the elder have had the exact same sentiment Since 100 B.C. by documented writings. Funny how the older generation always thinks things are going to shite since B.C. but the world is infinitely better today than 100 B.C.

I will never become the 50 year old that thinks his early time was the best time and every future generation is worse than ones before. What that really is, is ego and fear of growing old and getting closer to death, wanting to hold on to youth. That's the psychology behind it.

This has been happening since before Christ link

Who said anyone of us is "guaranteed" anything?

Not getting paid enough? TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and change your own circumstances...get a new job...develop a new skill...do something...anything...Don't sit there and feel entitled for society to do anything for you.

I've always thought jobs like that should be something more for highschool and college kids, unless you're someone running it.

you think jobs that happen during high school hours should be for high schoolers?

Fast food places are only open Monday through Friday from 7-3, and not during the summer? I learned something new today.

College kids, housewives.

Min wage jobs are usually easy, dont require much ethic or skill.

Places like fast food establishments are starter jobs, not destination jobs. That seems to be getting lost in the shuffle.

When prices keep rising in perpetuity without increases in wages, you have people who work fast food jobs that cant afford the food that they are making. I read an article recently that pretty much said poor people have been priced out of McDonalds. Now apply this across all industries and you wonder why young people cant get their lives started...it's because nobody wants to pay anybody, not just fast food work...and this is where societies and capitalism fall off a cliff.

You do what you have to do. They didn't need the government to give their kids better than what they had.

I worked two jobs while my wife was in nursing school, and she worked as much as she could. We also had our first child during her first semester. We did what we had to do so she could now have the career she does and we can live the life we do.

This is the problem, and raising min wage to $20 exacerbates it.

100 years ago, there weren't nearly as many unskilled labor jobs

You've got that completely backwards. There were more back then. Folks dug ditches by hand (unskilled). On construction sites material was moved by men. Longshoremen hauled goods from docks to trucks and trains. There were no concrete pump trucks; men handled that with wheelbarrows.

You mentioned restaurants. There were no patty making machines; people did that by hand. The amount of unskilled labor back then dwarfed what there is today.
