Wtf? We have 3 final 4s in the last 50 years and every single one of our NCAAT appearances outside of one or two have been in the last 50 years as well.

He was a pretty good coach but his players didn’t really like him and a lot left the program that could’ve helped us a lot. He struck gold with the f4 team of local guys but didn’t have a ton of good will built up outside of that. Seems like a different guy on the radio now, positive and friendly. Maybe he matured or maybe he just has less pressure but does a good job on the radio.

He was a prick to everyone but especially his bosses, and that doesn’t work in the long term.

Spending a decade at arky state mellowed him out. He is 10,000x a better human now.

My favorite John Brady story was one he told at a fundraiser meeting in those down years. He said he got a technical foul for yelling at a ref. He called the ref over and asked why he got a tech.

Ref: "You can't say stuff like that to me"
Brady: "Can I get a tech for what I think?"
Ref: "No, you can think whatever you want..."
Brady: "Well, I think you're a no good son of a bitch!"
*whistle*

Brady was maddeningly inconsistent. He could go from worst to first to worst again (and did) like no on else. He also had an acerbic personality that made him hard to get along with at times.

He was on the the top of the mountain after he reached the Final Four in 2006. He then immediately tried to leverage LSU for a big raise/extension by claiming interest in the NC State job...which didn't sit well. LSU was ranked in the top 10 to start the next season with Davis, Temple and Mitchell coming back from the Final Four team, along with a decent freshman class. Like clockwork, he went from first to worst that season. However, he was pissed about the criticism he received because of it and felt LSU fans were ungrateful given he had gone to the Final Four the last season. Not really acknowledging it was because he flopped that year.

The next season started poorly again. Particularly SEC play. Honestly, it was because of some key injuries. But LSU was in last place again and Brady had burned through all of his goodwill. He had often escaped firing by having a one-off good season after unimpressive seasons. This time he couldn't and was finally pushed out...to his shock.

Short version: Brady was an arse. People put up with it because he could pop a few timely great seasons. 2000, 2005, 2006. But once he started losing again people were done dealing with it.

Peoples’ assholes stayed in perpetual tightness watching those Brady teams pass the ball around, just waiting for that next unforced turnover.

He got severely outcoached in the 2006 Final Four and UCLA kicked his shite in

Sure but beating Duke and JJ Redick in the regional was incredible. While not his best game Tyrus Thomas may have been the most entertaining basketball player LSU has had in the last 30 years.

Coach Brady was one of the nicest, giving and most genuine people you could ever meet.
Ten seconds later he was the angriest, most profane and volatile person you could ever meet.
It was truly staggering to see it in person

LSU was facing Draconian Sanctions at the time and few wanted the LSU job. So they got a hungry but inexpensive guy to take the job. He had his moments but Brady was also going through some personal issues off the court that made his prickly nature absolutely toxic. SO when the team fell back to Earth after the 05-06 FF run, he had burned all of his goodwill and it was time to move him on

Going to Arky State and getting his personal life ontrack changed him and the guy we see now is the guy we wished John Brady would be all of the time. He really is a good person and to come back to LSU and be a part of the community is a blessing for him and a joy for us.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t 4 out of the 5 Final Four starters play together since they were really young?

I think Brady was a good X and o coach but was very hard on the players. That wore thin with many of them.

With time and maturity many players see Brady in a different light and realize he was trying to make them better players. Best example is Tack Minor who was the object of much of Brady's ire when he played for him ( often deservedly so). Tack was inducted into his high school hall of fame a few years ago and asked Brady to present him at the ceremony. If only Brady could have influenced Tack's stepson Denver Harris in the same way. There have been several photos of Brady with ex players and they seem to have a genuinely good relationship.

You also had other top local guys like Tasmin Mitchell, who was supposed to be elite (Parade All American 1st Team, etc), but was "merely" very good... and he might have been the reason for Brady's demise.

Merely good? The only two LSU players with more career points are Pete Maravich and Rudy Macklin. Tas fell 11 points short of being only the third Tiger to score 2000 points. He is also sixth in career rebounding. Three of the five have their jerseys hanging in the rafters of the PMAC: Macklin, Shaq and Petit.

I hope the Tigers can recruit a merely good player like Tasmin Mitchell every year.
