That tying own goal last night might be the worst thing that could have happened for the USMNT because Berhalter might actually have gotten canned if they lose this match
Thing is, we will have a home field World Cup which will only happen this once in our lifetimes. And we have the worst coach. And the best pool of players.
Our wins are in spite of coaching not because of it. It takes a broken play or one person to splash rather than team play.
I go back to OKC Thunder shortly after they moved. They fired Carlisimo and hired Scotty Brooks. Well, they had such a talented group of players (KD, Russ and Harden for starters) that the player talent won games not the coaching. But Brooks never taught his players he only benefited from them winning more and more every year. GM wasn’t going to fire a coach who kept winning more games each year. By the time he was fired it was too late. Players had bad habits and their window was gone as KD checked out.
This is what we have in USMNT now. A HC who is doing nothing tactically but has one of the greatest talent pools in our history who can often win on their own in spite of GB. That lucky win last night did more damage than a loss.
Fans are so confused too. They want to root for the players yet hate the coach. I’ve never seen so much coach hate as I see with GB. So fans want to both win and lose at the same time for the future of team. Never seen anything like this. I have yet to run into one person who is fully behind GB. Not one.
And if he stays and we do bad in WC, it will set US Soccer back decades as fans will leave for good. Last night was a small crowd in a soccer metro. It’s already starting.
