I will just never understand how you can get that complacent. That's vehicular homicide level negligence on the part of the captain.

It’s hard for me to believe that they hit the actual rig. With radar you’d almost have to try to hit it.

If they hit a wellhead that would make more sense. Some of those things barely show up on radar if at all, and there are a decent amount that are unlit. Not much you can do when they’re barely above the waterline and not lit up like they should be

No telling what happened. A boat like that probably has autopilot. Smooth seas, autopilot, low visibility, radar or heading sensor malfunction. I could easily see it happening. Or maybe they got tossed well before that with no kill switch and the boat just went found the rig on its own? Maybe they lost engine control?

We don't know anything right now. With how many people are out there running big boats piss drunk with no idea what they're doing (by no means accusing these guys whom i dont know of that), I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. Go out of grand isle on a Saturday in snapper season and keep the radio on 16. You'll hear of somebody in a bind more often than not.

It's tied to the rig in that picture so you're most likely correct. It probably was dragged there and tied off just because it was the closest thing. It doesn't look like it was found as the picture shows.

I saw a pic where it was in that rig, so pretty sure thats the one they hit. Play the game enough you'll either have a near miss or something will happen. How many of the venice charter captains have had issues? i can think of a dozen without racking my brain. Names withheld to protect the ignorant

Josh Howard hit a well head in a freeman maybe ten years ago, no fatalities, totaled boat.
That boat did not hit that rig, there would be no survivors if it had.

Prayers for the missing's family.

They centered whatever, I am even a bigger Contender fan now seeing her floating after that damage. Wow.

I'm wondering if they had to back it off the structure, did boat ram over it, or did it spring loose?

Was that accident before day break? Most likely an auto pilot inspired contact. Happens frequently enough to be a known issue

AutoPilots are designed to help the captain, not replace him. Unfortunately, some captains learn that lesson too late.

I read elsewhere it was around 630am. Still pretty damn dark this week, but no excuse. I see a radar and what looks like a Black Oak Nitron camera on the front of the top.

I run that area frequently in the summer since my family loves to visit the old lighthouse a couple miles away. There are no small structures out there. There are only 2 structures left in SS87, both fixed leg platforms like seen in the picture. The only caisson (single leg platform) was removed in 2013.

The small "wellheads" like in the bays inshore/nearshore don't exist out there. There are no "low visibility" structures. This is 8-9 miles from Coon Point in 30ft of water.

Had to be catastrophic mechanical failure or simple operator error. I'd love to know either way. There isn't much structure left in that area.

Was it really foggy? Like you said, there aren’t really any wellheads out there like you have inshore. Everything out there is a pretty good size structure.
