People knock it, but a friend's wife (no pic) is still driving hers with over 200,000 miles. She bought it after graduating college and hasn't had to do any major repairs, just regular maintenance.

Unless you’re poor or an absolute cheapskate, there’s no reason to own a Corolla for 200k miles.

Way to bury the lede, PGA.

Can anyone name a way buying a Toyota brand has fricked up, anywhere in the world, in the last 20 years? You're car guys, I'm not, but repeatedly, Toyota works, Toyota works, Toyota works.

The twin-tubo audis are fun cars. But like others have said, do not hang onto them for long. You're just asking for trouble.

They have had plenty of recalls and I could list a number of pattern issues with certain vehicles/drivetrains but in comparison to the competition they are head and shoulders above them in long term reliability. The thing is they build diving appliances that are in rough terms a generation behind in tech. That isn't to say that is bad, we own 2 Lexus vehicles right now. Most people don't need more than a driving appliance. Where they are lacking is performance. I haven't looked but I bet a Cayenne Turbo and X5M will walk the fastest Toyota/Lexus around a road course and obliterate them in a straight line. My guess is the quickest Toyota/Lexus on a road course (not counting the LFA) is the RC F Track Edition and I would bet the above 2 SUVs are significantly quicker around the track.

Toyota/Lexus makes great cars that are dead reliable and if you are the type to keep a car for 20 years and 300k+ miles they are by far the best financial options. The reality is most people don't do that which opens up more options. In the words of my grandfather (and thousands of other people) "that's why they make Fords and Chevrolets". As I said I appreciate and actually love Lexus vehicles but it they were my only choice in the morning I would be very sad because driving is one of my joys in life.

What dealer?

My thing is if you’re gonna get even a somewhat “luxury” car, you just need to lease. They’ll take care of the car because they know it’s still theirs

An extended warranty is a no brainer with Audi. Wife and I are looking at a Q5 right now and I'm just throwing $5k on top of whatever price we see to factor in the warranty costs.

Not all that long ago, toyota had issues with throttles sticking wide open and killing people. My buddy had a Tacoma that needed to be painted very early in life due to the factory paint being screwed up, and the roof had already rusted. Toyota is far better than most no doubt, but they are not perfect.

Sorry, but 60K miles and the engine fails? That is a fail no one should accept no matter what.

Well…. That’s just stupid.

“Hey! Wanna know how to save money and make it grow into wealth? Blow money on new cars every 3-4 years!!” Said no one with any financial sense.

I guess I should be laughing at these 4th and 5th generation large acerage farmers around here with 1990’s Z71s and rolls of 100s in their pockets.

One week later, engine starts making a loud clicking noise. Brought in vehicle to dealer service department again, vehicle has a rod knock and engine has to be replaced. Cost estimate is $30k.

Hahahaha!

Dude. Get away from that dealership IMMEDIATELY.

First off… a “clicking” noise isn’t a Rod. A Rod knock is an unmistakable hammering or a blunt metal banging sound very loud and noticeable. A “clicking” noise sounds like valvetrain. You could have a collapsed lifter that could be fixed for a grand or two most, labor included.

2nd.. if it is a Rod.. then there is no friken way a repair should cost 30k. None. Zero. They quoted you a brand new, valve cover to oil drain, engine from Audi and included their ridiculous labor. Find a good shop and let them diagnose. Then sit back and be astounded how bad Audi has fricked you to this point.

European cars are great till they break. I had a Volkswagen that the dealership was never able to get the check engine light off. Had to trade it in like that.
My BMW was a total nightmare. Never again.

"How would this have helped him, unless he had reached the end of the lease already?"

One benefit of a lease is that you're under factory warranty during your entire "ownership." I wouldn't consider buying a German vehicle and rolling the dice with future repair costs.

o I am not sure about that engine but it is possible to replace rod (or main) bearings on a lot of engines without removing the engine. I have never done rods myself but I have done

I have a VW and have seen A3 up close on a lift recent. There is a lot of BS under the front with the trans and front suspension. I suspect it's easier to pull the motor if it's a rod bearing issue. I would probably just do headgaskets and timing guides while it was out also.

Audi has never been great. BMW is worse now but that’s more alarming because BMW used to be great.
