If I can hear you eat/chew, I will politely leave the table. That sound makes me want to commit murder.
I worked with this guy who would chomp on every bite like he was biting into a brick. Chomp chomp chomp. I finally asked him one day if had ever gotten his tongue caught in that bear trap and he looked at me like I was crazy.
He said, you can hear that? I said, yes it’s loud as shite.
He thought only he could hear it and he stopped doing it after that.

I had same exact situation and joked with the guy (but really trying to make him aware it annoys me) I said "Jeez, does it not hurt your teeth to bite down that hard on the fork" Seriously sounded like he was chomping as hard as he could on a fork.
The next day, he moved desks to across the room. I was so happy. Didn't have to hear him eat. He was Indian, and in my experience they very often lack basic social skills like not smacking or eating loud. I also worked here for 6 months before I ever heard him say his first word. Was very awkward guy with heavy Indian accent. The office is 95% white, so I feel he just doesn't feel he fits in. Never makes casual small talk or joins in when a group is talking. Just stays in his corner. I wonder how that feels. Prob goes home to be alone. Never talks to anyone. Just shows up to work, does work, talks to no one, goes home, sits on couch.
