And yet, if Payton was that infatuated with him, they would have moved up to make sure they got him. If you really think a QB is out there that is such a slam dunk you must have him, you do everything in your power to get him. Franchise QBs don't grow on trees and if you have a chance to get one, you do what it takes, including trading up.
All the years the Saints traded up under Payton and that was a rare time the Saints stood pat, even with TWO first-round picks. Maybe what Payton was really doing was trying to bait someone away from taking Lattimore because the Saints needed Lattimore more than another QB at that time.
What Payton also doesn't ever point out was that the Saints had Brees, who still ended up playing another 4 years and was playing very well almost to the end of those 4 years. No way they were gonna sit Mahomes for 4 years. The Chiefs sat him for one, and even that is rare.
Again, there's so much bullshite to the "Payton knew Mahomes was the real deal" narrative. But Payton is always the smartest guy in the room, don't you know?
