I don't think you're going to find many people that are saying she's the biggest problem because of her looks. Of course she's really hot. That's the only thing that makes her bearable. Her character sucks, not her looks. She doesn't come off in any way as a top scientist/brilliant mind. Hell she barely talks any science the entire show and just bosses people around.

The best book readers can hope for is the overall theme of the story is kept even if some things are added or altered.
I just finished the Chinese adaptation, free on Prime, which reportedly is pretty close to the book (I haven't read it). There were some pretty significant changes made to the Netflix series, but I don't hate most of them if your goal is to make this a main stream show for Western audiences.
The biggest difference was time and the friend group of main characters. The Chinese version was 30 episodes and I believe it just covered book 1. The Netflix version was 8 episodes and it jumped ahead to use information from other books. I don't feel like the Chinese version had filler, but they focused on things that made it a lot more SciFi genre and not aimed at the main stream.
The friend group of main characters is nothing like the Chinese version. But I don't hate the choice for Western audiences, especially if you only have 8 episodes to tell the story vs. 30. The Chinese version brought a bunch of strangers together but they did form relationships as they went along because they had time to.
A few other key differences:
The handling of the Judgement Day in the Panama Canal. In the Netflix version they made the betrayers of humanity seem innocent and sympathetic and made using lethal force on them a moral dilemma. In the Chinese version they went out of their way to dirty them up even more. They weren't just betrayers of humanity that hated humans, they also worked with despicable, blood thirsty Western mercenaries. I'm not saying killing them wasn't a big deal, it did seem to impact the scientist behind the nano fiber some, but it wasn't like the Netflix version. In the Chinese version the nano fiber killing every single person on board silently and quickly before they could sound the alarm and destroy the data was what made it a good plan.
Wall facer, space brain, I guess they're coming in future seasons, but they weren't in the first season of the Chinese version.
Look and Feel. The Netflix version felt like an extended movie, the Chinese version felt like a KDrama. I don't see that as an insult to the Chinese version at all, it just wasn't as slick and shiny, focuses more on story and character development, and there are subtitles.
For those wondering which to watch, I've actually liked both. If you like scifi and can handle subtitles, I'd give the Chinese version a shot, even if you've already seen the Netflix version.

Why was Saul chosen, and once he declined, why is he being treated as if he did not?
How do the headsets appear and where do they originate?
Just a comment on the concept(s)...if they can pull off a plan now, then they could surely pull that same plan off in the future if they had to. Why spend resources now on such a plan instead of a slower build to better, more advanced tech that will surely come within the 400 year time frame?

Presumably the same reason the aliens decided to randomly break their silence and explain their master plan to the two most important people that could do something about it instead of just keeping quiet and let everyone forget about it for 400 years…it makes for better tv

It’s not explicitly explained yet, but you have the clues in this season.
The Wallfacer project’s goal is to come up with plans the Trisolarans couldn’t figure out. They treat him like that because they think his public decline of the job was part of his plan to trick the aliens.

why not just wait for tech to be advanced? shite im sure someone will figure it out in the future, lets just put it off for 350 years and let them sort it out.
strides in research are being made while doing these plans. they figured out how to get an object to travel at 1% light speed to do the head in space... thats a big step. its the same top speed of the trisolaris fleet.
they are trying to enact plans that will be a scaffold for the advanced tech of the future.

Netflix confirmed today that the show will have two more seasons to finish the story.

In the books, there were two primary camps in the "Earth-Trisolerian Organization" (Slightly different name for the aliens). 1 group (Ye's group) wanted the aliens to come and save humanity, the other group wanted (Mike Evan's group) the aliens to exterminate the human species (They used the Human's ability to deceive as the reason the alien's needed this group in their extermination effort, exactly opposite of what is portrayed in the show).
Going into Judgement Day, this makes it considerably less problematic for the engineer behind the nano-weapon as Mike Evan's exterminators were on board the ship, the only concern for casualties was the 1 Panamanian ship navigator that would be on board through the Panama Canal
