But the film that has always impressed me the most...and would watch it over and over in my youth (VHS Letterbox) remember that?

Was Lawrence of Arabia. I've never seen its equal to this day. Especially and only when you watch it in complete darkness.

For quite a while that was #1 for me too. I still like it an awful lot but I wouldn't even rank my favorite Peter O'Toole movie now. That goes to my second favorite film of all time The Stunt Man. I've got about 250 movies I could pick number 3 depending on how I feel on a particular day but Once Upon a Time in the West and The Stunt Man have been one and two for a good twenty years now for me.
