I picked up the book after watching the series. Only about a third of the way through as it's a massive book. The book is, uh, explicit in some areas 
I think I like Book Blackthorne more than Show Blackthorne. He's much smarter in the book. Maybe that's just because we get internal monologue in the book.

Show Blackthorne is an idiot. Toranaga himself says he only keeps him around because he amuses him.
Book Blackthorne was a worthy foil for Toranaga. Book Toranaga keeps him around because Blackthorne was a leverage point against the western powers and could help him in the future build a navy.

I picked up part 1 and 2 and read them over a 3 week period. I finished part 2 right before the finale.
Enjoyed both, but the book was definitely better.
