There was a scene where Taiko asks Toranaga to protect his son from the other Daimyos before he dies.
You are correct. However, I am fairly certain there is an "Emperor" in Kyoto that presumably will have no involvement in the series. So I believe the Daimyo are ruling on behalf of the Taiko's heir, who himself would theoretically rule Japan on 'behalf of the Emperor' once he comes of age.

Another good episode. I liked the further expansion of Mariko’s backstory and her discovering her father married her off to her husband out of protection and survival.
I’m still fully convinced her husband was allowed to live and is working for Ishido.
