Wow I never even considered this but it makes a lot of sense.

My thoughts are:

- I can’t see any way he fought his way out of that fray without some help.
- He HATES Anjin and seems pretty damn miserable married to Mariko (and beats her when drunk).
- Everytime they show him when Taranga is speaking or making decisions, he has this look on his face like he’s perpetually pissed.

It just seems to connect.

Yea, hadn't thought of that either. I'm ready for the husband to go ahead and get his head removed.

Another good episode as expected. Was getting pretty sleepy there towards the end and reading subtitles is like taking a sleeping pill for me so I'm going to have to go back and rewatch the very end.

There is an emperor in Japan during the events of the series and the historical events its based on, but it is not the boy. In that era, the emperor is purely a deity like figurehead and is isolated from any real power by the daimyos. In the series, Toranaga refers to the emperor at least once when he says something along the lines of "we all honor his imminence in Kyoto." Also, Taiko isnt a hereditary position, but the Taiko was able to unify the daimyos enough to agree to preserve the peace by allowing his son (the boy) to take power, and he tried to ensure that setup by creating the council of regents.

I missed this, but thanks.

I’m still fully convinced her husband was allowed to live and is working for Ishido.

If so then Toranaga really needs to work on his allies. His council consists of two guys who worked for Ishido, the son (nephew?) of one of the guys who was working for Ishido, his dumbass kid, one loyal old guy, and the Anjin.

Does anybody think the young guy who is with the prostitute knew beforehand she was going to be with Blackthorne and told her to to get some dirt on Blackthorne? When they looked at each other it was a "I can't believe she fricked a savage" look but also gave off a bit of a "you better have gotten some dirt on him" vibe as well.

He obviously knew beforehand. They literally talked about it in the scene before.

And yeah, Mariko told him to act like they were being watched at all times. And she told him to enjoy it "for both their sakes"

I'm ready for some crimson sky!

Toronaga's brother better be badass!

Can Blackthorne wield a sword?

Will Mariko separate her husband's head from his body?

Blackthorn sure has some balls not being satisfied with all his good luck. He's fared better than the rest of the crew :)

You don't need a sword when you have a cannon that fires chains.

Right? He’s accidentally found himself in charge of a freaking army and basically the lead advisor for one of the most powerful men in Japan and he keeps asking for his ship so he can leave

Let’s be honest, most of the leaders and regents we’ve seen to this point are pretty duplicitous. So it’s not really shocking to see that trickle down the ranks.

I missed the part when Blackthorne told them not to touch it.

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but how do you miss this? Are you fricking with your phone while watching or something? It's a pivotal scene, and it's plainly shown.

I'll never understand people who "watch TV" while on their phone. But I'm a Gen X guy so I wasn't handed a smart phone as soon as I popped out of the womb.

Now get off my lawn.

My phone is up while I'm watching it. Might check it if I get a text or something but I'm not looking at it. My wife is the same way, if one of us pulls out our phone mid show we'll give each other the evil eye. That's definitely not the issue. I am watching this late at night, that's when I get most of my TV time in and sometimes I fall asleep while watching. Rewatched that episode and going to rewatch the latest one because I've been so tired from work lately. Also I'm not the smartest person on this site so I need to rewatch crap again just in general.

And in my defense, even on the rewatch, it was a very quick part. Pivotal, sure, but that one part could have easily been missed.

That brothel scene

Another fish out of water moment for Blackthorne, having to do the “morning after” walk with the whore in front of the whole village.

FYI. Not sure if discussed, but FX shows have always looked terrible on YouTube TV, and usually they look even worse on Hulu.

Fortunately, if you have Disney+, Shogun is streamed in UHD with Dolbyvision and it looks fantastic like the show deserves.

Kid finally grows a sack and goes out like that.

Pretty damn unfortunate. Interested in seeing the fallout though.
