Yeah, it's just a single book. The other books don't have anything to do with Japan outside of one, and it's set in the 1860s and doesn't have anything to do with the Shogun characters outside of loosely tying in a descendant of a main character.

On Hulu, (At least on mine) I have an option to watch an English dubbed version of the show. I prefer the subtitled version myself, but to each his own.

Thanks for that, we’re on episode 4 now. I could do subtitles for Narcos on Netflix because I some idea of what was being said, without reading everything. Japanese not so much. FX can put out quality TV and Shogun is definitely that. Also, the dubbed version doesn’t sound ridiculous.

The ads on FX suck. Too often and they really cockblock the drama in good moments. I guess that's designed to trigger Hulu subscriptions.

They did a good job of making me feel uncomfortable at times for this episode 5.

The story moves well. Netflix wouldnt have revealed Mariko's story until season 03.

Yabushige-sama's scenes and dialog are golden. His casting was spot on.

I’m floored by the pace of episode 5. They managed to fit so much shite into a 55 minute run time. I felt like I’d been watching for way longer. Not a single wasted scene. The character development in this show is as good as I’ve seen.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this show is incredible. I am not familiar with the source novel, so it's all new to me.

That dinner scene with Buntaro (one bad motherfricker) was so tense.

The gardner/pheasant situation really makes you feel for just how lost Blackthorne really is.

We watched all 5 episodes today, and it kept our attention the entire time. Your definitely right about no wasted scenes, I had to pause it when I left the room because I didn’t want to miss anything.

Between the Gardner, his consort, the Pheasant, arguing with Mariko’s husband, and handing Toranaga his swords, they really nailed the fish out of water aspect for him this episode. Just a complete culture shock for him and the Japanese.

Him setting the rock back up in garden in shame for the Gardner was heartbreaking.

What was the point of him wanting to hang the bird up for a few days? Just him thinking it was still England's climate? Wouldn't it still be rotten after a day or two?

It was common practice in England to let the bird rot for a few days to "tenderize" and "season" it. In the book there are many times where it is shown that although Blackthorne sees his culture as being more civilized and advanced, it is quite the opposite he truly is the "barbarian".

They may not cover it in the show but in the book his men are moved to live with a sub culture that I think may be Vietnamese or Taiwanese and seen by the Japanese as dirty uncultured animals. Blackthorne's men find it a great place to live and get along much better with them. By the time Blackthorne gets to see him he's adapted so much in to the Japanese culture that he finds them to be disgusting.

Also, I don't remember this from the book but I think the reason Lord Toronada asked Blackthorne to teach him to dive, and made him do it over and over, was his sneaky way of getting Blackthorne to bathe.

It’s a common theme in the book they both think the others have a lot of barbaric characteristics. The Japanese obviously do way better when it comes to things like hygiene, discipline, respect for authority etc.

But babies also aren’t executed because their father spoke out of line. The respect for authority/concern over “not losing face” is too severe in Western eyes.

I will say this, I’ve busted my wife’s chops for years any time she vacuums or we have the slightest disagreement that she is disturbing the harmony of our house. I’m so glad she got to see that scene of Buntaro apologizing for that in live action. Great scene in the book and show, but she rolled her eyes pretty hard at that one because of me.

Not really. They are simply related by their subject matter being rooted in Asia. The next one (Tai-Pan) deals with the opium trade in China and has nothing, other than remote geography, to do with Shogun. I would only read King Rat and maybe Tai-Pan in the James Clavell "Asian saga" in addition to the clear winner Shogun.

No Gai-Jin? I really enjoyed that one as well. As mentioned earlier it’s Japan but about 250 years later so Japan is still feudal but there are a lot more westerners. I agree the Shogun is the best of the bunch but to me that feels like the most direct “sequel” (if you can call it that)

Haven't read the book..
But to the readers, does it seem like they are flying through chapters or stretching it out for more seasons?

Loving this show btw

It's a 10 episode mini series. No second season.

There will not be a second season, nor should there be.

Currently, we are about 600-700 pages into the book which is the halfway point just like the show.

Also, read the book! It's damn good and just as engaging as the show is.

People still hang pheasants up to age a couple days. Has to be the right temperature but it seems cold in the show. (snowing at some points)
