Almost 50 years ago. I remember it being a good read.

I listened to it on audio as well. Fantastic.
My wife was relieved when I finished the 53 hours as I finally stopped referring to myself as her liege lord. Haha!

It is excellent. One of those books that was a joy to read.

Truly excellent novel. It was one of those that brings you into the story immediately.

I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't get into this novel. I'll have to try again soon.

Love Shogun. One of my all time favorite books. And the sequels are good too.

I didn't want to be the first to respond with anything but a glowing response. I finished. I thought it was just ok. I honestly don't remember a ton of the story a few years later other than the beginning and end.

It’s a top 4 or 5 novel of all time for me. I read it once and have since listened to the audiobook 3 times. I just finished the 3rd listen last week in anticipation of the new series.
My wife will be glad when I quit using Japanese around the house in our conversations. LOL

I was going to buy it off Amazon and read it before I started the FX series but I went ahead and started the series last night. I don't know how many pages that equates too but that's more hours than a sci fi trilogy I just listened too

It's really long but the storylines are really, really involved. Very much worth the read or listen. Book was like 900 pages if I remember right.

I wish it had been 153 hours.
Also while we’re on subject, the rest of Clavell’s Asian Saga is pretty damn good as well.
The man had talent.

Very good novel. Read it when it was first published. (I think one of the old tv networks made a mini-series out of it with the dude that played Dr.Kildare.)

Yeah, Shogun, King Rat, Taipan, and Noble House are all fantastic.
Whirlwind and Gaijin aren't on the same level, but still solid.

damn this book must be popular right now. Used copies are expensive as all hell on ebay!
eta: Just noticed that I have two Audible credits. They've split it in to two parts there so might pick them both up.

A 99% on rotten tomatoes for the TV show will do that

Used local bookstore for the win! Picked it up for a dollar. It's my first time reading it and I love it so far!
I have read in some reviews that it bogs down and becomes a slog around 500 pages in but keep trucking because the end makes it worth it. Any truth to this?
