The ship was launched on 14 February 1939 and during the elaborate ceremonies was christened by Dorothee von Löwenfeld, granddaughter of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the ship's namesake.

Great song, but as a history buff, that song is riddled with inaccuracies, starting with the opening line. The war had been going on for over a year and a half by that time.

So you're saying that on her deck were guns not as big as steers and shells not as big as trees?

If anything, the shells would be as big as steers and the guns as big as trees

Which is odd, because in another song he accurately described the way soldiers used to fire cannon balls out of alligators.

I wrote a poem to commemorate it.
The grandest ship upon the sea!
A gleaming, bristling hunk!
The legend of the Bismarck is quite interesting!
It Sunk!

How many shots did it take to sink the Bismarck?
British guns lobbed 2,876 shells at the ship, hitting it up to 400 times, yet it stayed afloat. A torpedo volley, though, broke through, sinking the Bismarck in four minutes on May 27. The ship took 2,131 lives with it. The British ships Rodney, King George V, Norfolk, and Dorsetshire all fire on the Bismarck.

And it's still a point of contention that the Germans scuttled the Bismarck and it was not the damage soaked up from the British although it was probably a combination of both but using a UAV they have been inside the ship and have seen that the sea chests are open for flooding the ship.

Thank goodness for a Swordfish from Ark, and then KGV and Rodney--and the men of the Royal Navy who made it happen!
