Not on subject, but I wonder why every news outlet is calling paid security "off duty" officers. They were there on paid detail. They didn't appear out of the rectory like super heros.

1. Extra duty is not on duty - it is a separate situation so they were simply being accurate in describing the situation.
2. The two responders absolutely are heroes. They stopped the threat at risk of their own lives. We will see if they can account for all of their rounds, but I would bet that the two other people were harmed by the criminal rather than the officers' fire.
3. You seem to think that nobody is armed in the rectory or elsewhere of our churches. This is very often wrong. There are more churches coordinating response scenarios from their memberships - aside from hiring armed extra-duty officers. Just because people may not be serving as police/security that day does not change the fact that a lot of them have been trained in active shooter response, are well prepared and attend church services with protective equipment, plans and skills.
