Blake Baker Defensive Rankings

I keep seeing this topic in regard to next years LSU defense and what it might look like. "Blake Baker took Mizzous defense from terrible to good in one season."
Do yall now who Blake took over for? Steve Wilks, the current 49ers Defensive Coordinator, currently top 8 ranked defense. Ya know, the guy who at Mizzou who ranked 124th our of 130 FBS schools.
So turning our program around should be incredibly easy right?

Crazy the parallels for us and Mizzou on defense.
Wilks is a very well respected NFL coach. By all accounts House is a very well respected NFL guy. Both couldn’t field a top 100 defense at the college level.
It’s pretty clear that what they want to run is too complex for the college game. Student athletes don’t spend enough time on the practice field to run some of the complex schemes they like. I think Baker is going to simplify a lot and allow our athletes to play fast. We looked way slower than we actually are last year because everyone was over thinking their roles.

I don't doubt that some of this is true.
However, it doesn't explain:
1. NO push or pressure on the QBs except for a couple of very short bursts here and there - didn't matter if we blitzed or not
2. Garbage tier tackling. That was one of the worst tackling LSU teams I've seen and I've been watching 50+ seasons.

Wait a minute... that means the following:
Matt House, if he went to the NFL as a DC, his defense would be ranked about 7th in the NFL after 2 years
And Blake Baker should have the 30th ranked college defense in FBS in 2024 and around 15th by 2025
And that it is easier to coach in the NFL because the players are better
= to Blake Baker is light years better than Steve Wilks and Matt House, and LSU with Blake Baker will be a top 10-20 college DC, which is all LSU needs to win championships. But, if Baker would be a DC in the NFL, he might be the #1 ranked DC in the NFL.
Did I do that right!

Ya know, that's the entire point of this post. We actually have fans who believe this.
Wait until our fans find out Blake ran a 4-2-5 last year mostly, and would stick a safety in the box occasionally. Yall know who's going to play that role right?

Seemed that we were reading and reacting. As such we were getting destroyed at the point of attack. That does not explain awfultackling and no pass rush. Agree even when blitzing we do not disturb the QB

That doesn't explain our D Line regression. Our DTs especially. While they are looking for the run, their initial push isn't to wait to see if it's a rush or pass first. It's not like we ran crazy plays with LBs blitzing and DT falling back in coverage.

Tackling was terrible. A lot of that was being out of position.
I think lack of a DL coach explains the zero pass rush up front. Did you notice how bad our technique was on twists and stunts? We didn’t plug a single backside lane when running any blitz packages. Our tackles would twist around 5 to 6 yards off the LOS sometimes. None of the levels of defense meshed well with each other. It just looked clunky and unorganized.

Which explains why the whole staff was fired. Getting Bo Davis was fricking huge.

lol we didn’t have a line coach. Players were playing way off the ball. It was embarrassing

We also had the slowest linebacker pair since the 90s.

quote:Yeah, we didn't have a damn DL coach. You know damn well that DL wasn't that bad the year prior. Hell, the year Baker left (2021), Ed finally allowed DC Jones to blitz and run his own defense AFTER the Ole Miss game. Let's see how he did shall we?

Bama - 6 rush yards .23 ypc 1 TD
Arkansas - 141 rush yards 3.53 ypc
ULM - 118 rush yards 3.19 ypc
TAMU - 54 rush yards 1.93 ypc
They forced 11 sacks vs those 3 SEC teams. Against the 5 SEC teams before the switch to Jones getting full control, they had 7 sacks TOTAL! They had more sacks in the 3 SEC games after the change than they did in the 5 SEC games prior. As a matter of fact, it took the UCLA game (6th power 5 game) to equal the same amount of sacks they got in 3 power 5 games after he made the switch.
21 TFL in the 5 SEC games before the switch, 26 TFL in the 3 SEC games after the switch
The rushing numbers and passing numbers per SEC games are also significantly better in the switch. It takes a bit of work to do it, so I'll skip out, but check out what LSU did in the first four games (UCLA, Miss St, Central Michigan, FCS school), compared to the last four games (Bama, Arkansas, ULM, TAMU).
The first four games
345 ypg given up, 4.84 yards per play, 22.8 ppg given up
The last 4 games
299 ypg given up, 4.64 yards per play, 18.5 ppg given up
The last 4 games had 3 SEC teams. The first 4 games had 1 SEC team and an FCS team. Do you see the massive difference?
ALL OF THIS, shows you what a simple change in philosophy DURING THE SEASON, can do for a defense. Think of an entire defensive philosophy changing over an entire offseason. We have new position coaches every where. All these guys are great position coaches. All the kids will be coached up.

I am not looking for miracles in one year but at least be in the top 50 in total defense. An LSU defense like last year was totally unacceptable.

I only played 3 years in HS as a Safety, but you can see it if you know what to look for. (They were thinking too much and not making plays)
Football is not Rocket Science, but many coaches try to make it so.
Let College Football Players use their athleticism to make plays without having to think that much.
This was Matt House's downfall. His NFL scheme was too difficult for LSU Athletes to learn and execute. His Ego and Stubbornness would not allow him to change, modify or make adjustments either. Come hell or high water, he was gonna do what he wanted regardless of the outcome. Damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead. (Diaco's Coup at halftime of the A&M game and the ten minute installation of Cover 2 Trail is a perfect example)
Pennywise and his amazing Circus Level performing ego cost us a NC with that BS!

i wonder if House having come most recently from the NFL tried to bring only thud tackling vs full tackling to practice. our defense needed to work on full tackling technique.

They literally did not have a position coach the entire season.
