The Wire has been coming up recently and The Sopranos seems to always come up with it and I was curious how they were seen by a wider group. This is the RT, JustWatch, and IMDB ratings for both. They are nearly identical.

It’s past its prime.

When the Godfather first came out, it was great.

My wife and tried watching The Wire based solely on this board's recommendations. We couldn't get into it. At all.

I watched The Godfather for the very first time at the movies a few years ago. It was incredible.

It’s decent, but the best show ever seems like it’s a hive mind of this board. Perhaps people should lay off the best show ever crap so people don’t go in with extremely high expectations

Contrarian is not how I would describe OP - and I mean that as a pejorative. He's neither genuine or intelligent.

However, for those that don't like or can't get into The Wire, of course not everyone sees something the same. That's not a shade - although it may get to a point that if you dislike every show MTV recommends, it's more on you.

I liked the Wire, but I watched it over a decade ago.

I saw the Godfather for the first time just a few years ago (after I saw departed, goodfellas, casino, sopranos, etc)

It wasn’t “bad” but I didn’t get the same awe that many have. I remember loving Goodfellas when I saw it, not so much Godfather.

Pay phones & pagers, small time drug dealers….i get it “what’s the big deal”.

Not me. Having seen countless dozens of threads you start all over the various boards, you won't understand the show's greatness no matter what we say.

It isn't remotely M/TV board hivemind, it is considered top 5 or at least top 10 by a predominance of people that watch TV. The aggregated reviews show that. I am not sure anyone here has called it the best show ever, if they have they are in a small minority, IMO top 5 absolutely. That being said if someone thinks it is the best show ever why should they worry about someone else's expectations, if they think it is the best then they clearly don't think they are setting unreasonable expectations.

There is also the idea of criteria when talking about the greatest TV shows. Mine is a mix of importance and personal enjoyment. I enjoy The Wire more than The Sopranos but the wise guys from North Caldwell are a far more important show. Just like I enjoy South Park more than The Simpsons but dysfunctionally functional family from Springfield are far more important to the history of TV than Cartman and Co.

I did a re-watch & started with S3 after watching a long S1 & S2 recap. You might try that.

For years I have heard how amazing this show was from everybody

I have tried to watch it from the start at least 10 times now and I can’t get through the first season

Does it get better after the 1st season?

Good luck. I've finally given up. I'm tired of forcing myself to watch this thing. I watched two seasons, and I've had all I can take. There's too many shows and movies out there that I actually enjoy watching. The Wire isn't enjoyable. It's slow and is a pain in the arse to watch.

I can not see why people love this show. I tried.

Oh gmafb. It’s not even close. Let’s start another debate over which season was the worst. 2 or 5? Best show eva tho!!!

It’s overrated. Period

I did a quick search of posters that dislike/hate/overrated takes.

In fewer than 30 responses for OT, 80% of posts disliking The Wire came from posters that have at least 10 of their last 20 posts on Poli.

Oh there is absolutely a theme for people who don’t like The Wire or “don’t get it”……….

Sure, it doesn’t have to be everyone’s or no one’s #1 but it is universally a top tier tv show. If someone doesn’t get why it gives me pause.

I love people who say they “just don’t get it”. Oh I get it. I get that it was a slow drag of boring arse most of the time. A few seasons weren’t good at all, but somehow it’s the best ever.

But I do agree with you on The Wire. I liked the show. I did.. But in all, it was just a good Cop/Druggy show. Some good characters. But to me, it was no where near a top 5 show or probably even a top 10 for me. I just think I didnt get it like most did here. I have tried to go back and do a rewatch but I always stop after a few episodes

You’re not alone.

There's nothing great about it. It's a fricking chore to get through. If this show is greatness, then TV simply sucks. I don't get this boards infatuation with it. Unless you watched it when it came out and you like it for nostalgic reasons, it's not very good.

Are we supposed to think you are a cool and edgy with these contrarian takes? Because this is more a self own than anything Shakespeare can be a chore to get through but it’s still great.

it’s “slow” because it is developing characters and story that are complex and nuanced not just 2 dimensional “good guys vs bad guys” or focused on 1 crime.

And it’s not just this board that ranks this show as one of the best of all time. And it’s nothing to do with “nostalgia”. Not everyone has to like it, I’m not a big fan of Breaking Bad, I find it too bleak and depressing but I understand it’s a great show just not my cup of tea.

No. I thought The Wire was an average show at best.

Makes no difference. I didn't give a shite about anyone except Omar. And he played a small role.

It's an opinion like mine. Just because 100 people say it's the best does not make it one of the best.

I’m of the firm belief that if you reach the scene in the first season where Dee is explaining how to play chess to Bodie and Wallace (S1, E3) and you don’t enjoy the show it’s not for you. That was the hook for me.

No wonder you didn’t like a show that requires you to pay attention if your reading comprehension is this poor and you don’t get nuance or sarcasm
Why do you go out of your way to says it’s avg at best if you are trying to be cool or something. When I don’t like something I don’t go out of my way to comment in threads about it.

So you don’t like complex characters and a story that makes you think, got it.

Yes only 100 people in the world think it’s a great show When 96% of people who have watched says it’s one of the greatest shows ever that’s pretty objective. Doesn’t mean you have to like it of course.
