Between Mardi Gras and work ramping up, my reading has been a bit slow. I have found that this book isn’t the easiest read but it’s very rewarding once you get going. Meaning I can’t just pick it up for 5-10 minutes and read a few pages, I really have to carve out 30 minutes to an hour to really get into it.

But I digress. My question really is Why did the Emperor decide to remove the Harkonens and give Arrakis to the Atreides if he plans to use his own soldiers disguised as Harkonens to sabotage Duke Leto?

Maybe they mentioned it and I just missed it? I’m only a quarter done with the book so if I will find out the motive later, just tell me I’ll find out later.

Duke Leto was extremely popular among the Landsraad, and the emperor saw Leto as a threat.

The emperor couldn't just take Leto out, so he used the Harkonnens to do it. Since the Harkonnens and Atreides had been feuding for centuries, the emperor could hide his destruction of House Atreides as a legal feud between two houses.

Disputes between houses are regulated by Kanly, which is a set of rules for house to house warfare meant to limit the destruction of infrastructure and loss of innocent life.

The Harkonnens invading Arrakis and destroying the Atreides was apparently legal under the rules of Kanly, since no other great house blinked an eye.

But the emperor had no legal basis to just unilaterally destroy a house because he didn't like them.
