I'm sorry, but this isn't making sense. They gathered at a friend's house to watch a football game. Did the friend lock them out of the house? They could never go inside to pee, get some more beer, to warm up, etc?

Even if the friend locked them out of the house while he fell asleep maybe, why don't they ever get back in their cars to warm up?

The homeowner never once thought to say bye to his friends? He had company over, he never once went to clean up the mess made? He never once went outside to see their cars still parked there?

If this dude is truly innocent then I am assuming it went like this: the homeowner and his friends went on a serious bender during the game. This dude passed out while his friends were still awake. The game ended around 7 something I think. This dude possibly slept that entire next day, only going to the bathroom or the kitchen, possibly(probably) doing more drugs and/or boozing to nurse his hangover. Xanax could be a big factor here.

He has a second hangover from trying to nurse his first hangover and he nurses it again the next day. All the while he just assumes that his friends had bolted either after the game or early that next morning while he was passed out. The last thing he'd ever expect is that they were frozen to death in his back yard. Never looked out to the front(or side?) of the house where their cars were, or his backyard. He just ignores the people messaging him looking for them because he is hungover, stoned, drunk, and doesn't want to deal with it, never considering that something actually bad had happened to them.

None of that is all that implausible, especially considering the police seem confident that there was no foul play involved. And what about motive? What motive could this dude possibly have had for letting his friends freeze to death?

The weirdest thing to me is that these dudes just let themselves freeze to death, but its entirely possible I suppose that they all got so trashed that they passed out and died from the exposure.

That was the first thing that popped into my head. I've had more experience mixing benzos and booze than I want to admit but it's not hard to lose multiple days or a weekend if you go on one of those benders. Checking messages and putting two and two together about the cars outside isn't something that's automatic if you're popping bars and chugging beer

I think they got a hot shot of coke or heroin that had fent in it and passed out in the backyard. It happens lightning fast. Then they died from exposure and the homeowner, like you said, was just on a bender and didn't go out back or think twice about the cars.

Of course it's possible. If just say they had been partying with alcohol and or drug's then the three friends possibly went out side while the other friend passed out. The three that went out side may have been so trashed that they didn't realize how the body would or could react to certain temperatures. Say one sat down for a minute and then the next one and so on. Depending on how much alcohol and or drug's were in there systems it is very possible that they simply passed out. And unfortunately froze to death. And it's also possible that the friend inside could have known what happened and became so scared that he made up the story about being asleep. Regardless of how this happened it truly was a tragedy. I hope people will pay attention to this story because it could happen again.
