If I'm not going to eat it, I don't hunt it unless it is a nuisance animal.

I don't know anything about the current black bear population in Louisiana. If they have become over populated, it may be a good idea to start taking out culls.

I’ve never seen a wild black bear where I live in Louisiana, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were any number of them in North Louisiana. I would not be opposed to a limited hunting season with tags similar to how we treat alligators.

quote:

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries initiated a process that could allow up to 10 hunters to kill one bear each, for a total of 10 bears, next year.

If the biologists have done the work to determine that this is the sustainable limit in Louisiana I’m good with it.

What's the population? I grew up hunting in the Atchafaylaya Basin and heard about bears, but in all my time in those woods never saw one or knew someone that personally saw one. Has the population grown in recent years?

By the time the State allows any intervention, LA will be overrun with black bears... Usually the way it goes...

the proper habitat is well past it's carrying capacity. People are seeing many bears in places that have never had them before - it's long past the time for a season

I’ve seen 3 different sows fron stand this year. Feeders don’t stand a chance.

When I did my hunter education class, they made sure to cover bears and how they were protected.

They also talked about a guy who had mistakenly killed a bear and got in deep shite over it. What made me smile was that the guy was a professor at ULL and his background was supposedly biology. And he claimed he had mistaken the bear for a pig.

The original goal of the plan to re-establish the Black Bear in Louisiana was to get the population high enough to support manageable hunting seasons

Wildlife management should NEVER be done at the ballot box.

It should be left up to the state game and fish departments.

One wondered into the wrong side of town in Ruston late summer and got murdered. Union Parish just above us is out of control with them.

Don’t shoot one with a GPS tracker on its neck. And if you shoot one be very selective about who you tell and don’t bring it to a taxidermist and don’t post the photos on Facebook.

You will probably have to be Jeff Landry’s cousin or political donor to end up with one of the ten legitimate bear tags.

For some reason this topic reminds me of a bumper sticker that was on the wall of Fred's when I was in school that read "Save a whale, harpoon a fat chick".

People do it in other states. Bear is pretty freaking greasy, though.

Coworker have some some bear sticks/mini sausages a couple years back. The taste was ok, but even just one felt pretty damn heavy in the stomach. Was weird.

I'd be for it as long as there is no baiting and no dogs used.
