I travel a ton to Detroit for work projects in the area. The family (wife, 2 boys 10, 8) joined me this past summer and had a blast.
Hotels -- Marriot Renaissance Center and Pontchartrain are my two favorites downtown. I think the MRC best because of the views and restaurants.
Food -- London Chophouse (old school steakhouse). Get a coney dog from either Lafayette or American Coney Island. There is also some really good middle eastern/Lebanese food in the Detroit area also so that is worth a look.
Definitely look at the Henry Ford Museum. We did museum, Greenfield Village, and the Rouge Factory Tour. We also did the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant tour.
We caught a Tigers game but a hockey game would be a blast too.
