Do and don’t- resume protocols when changing career fields

Long story short… anticipating a career field shift from construction project management into a sales position completely unrelated to construction, but will definitely be worth the shift financially.
I have to prepare a resume but some of my work history (recent) is not applicable to what I’ll be moving towards.
Any advice or anyone experienced this sort of transition?

I would tailor your experience toward the new gig. Describe your accomplishments and how you developed new business relationships and drove profitability. Sales is about business sense, people and relationships. Focus on the areas from previous work that translate.

Great advice, thank you. I’m 41 and have a solid sales background but here lately it’s been all industrial/commercial construction projects. More management than sales.

The neat trick is that you can make up whatever you want about the actual specifics of your experience. Can't lie about dates and titles because those get confirmed via background check, but you get to choose how the details of your work are represented and as long as you can back that up in an interview you're golden.
What type of sales are you moving to? Is it pure hunting for new business, growing existing customers, or fostering partner/reseller relationships?

Focus on transferable skills and value-added outcomes specific to your role.
