Leave one of the faucets dripping.

A small drip with some tankless, will not start the heating section. They are sensitive with water flow.

even better. You just need it moving barely so it doesn't freeze.

You can also just turn the tankless heater off at the control panel. Or, some brands can simply be un-plugged. Then trickle the hot side and kill two birds with one stone.

Some of the newer ones have "freeze protection", but no one seems to comment on how well it works.

I had the same (looking) unit installed a few months ago and it has supposed freeze protection. unit didn't freeze last night

You have to let the hot water run and the cold water run. Be sure the hot water is running hard enough to trigger the sensor. No amount of insulation will stop it from freezing

You don't need the heater to turn on. Mine is on the north side of my house. My valves aren't exposed like OP's, but they are just inside the enclosure. Lined with some scrap blue board, and hot side faucets trickling NOT kicking on the heater it was fine. 17* one night and 13* last night.

It doesn't take 50GPM to keep a line from freezing.

For the future, I would insulate the pipes much better than they are now. And somehow cover it all temporarily when it gets really cold.

My lines froze and then thawed but pipe busted. Was pissed and happy at the same time that it is on the outside of the house. Everything is well insulated but I didn't drip my hot water. You live and you learn.

Turned on both hot and cold and no issues last night. Just did little more than a small drip.

Fachie do you have pictures of the insulated box you built. I built a box out of plywood to protect my tankless heater and just looking for better ideas?

Was maybe thinking of building a box out of alum. and insulating the box.

I have #2 tankless heaters on the outside of my house. I have the cosmetic cover over my pipes which are directly underneath, and they go almost straight into my house. I wrap the pipes with foam, as much as possible, but then also wrap this around the pipes, stuffing the box as much as possible.

I shared this in another thread but I see you have a 120V outlet right below the heater (likely to run the controls for it). Wrap this cable around your pipe and the built-in thermostat will heat it up and prevent freezing

Rinnai RGB-25U-C Universal Recess Box is what I used. In the lower part there is enough room to line that area with blue board. I wouldn't have bought the box, and made one myself, but at the time we were trying to finish the build, and my wife knew it would get put on a list of things to finish later, and never get done.

We turn ours off before bed and leave a couple faucets dripping with hot. No issues .
