85 scholarship limit. Roster limit and scholarship limit are two different things.

As for the walk on thing, I'm sure there is something preventing it's widespread abuse.

But I have never seen anyone actually produce the rule/governing power.

And if there is a rule will it withstand a court challenge? Who wants to stand in court and say "Your Honor it is imperative these athletes can't pay their own tuition!".

Yes, everyone is aware.

The question at hand is after you have your 85 if you have a 5 star want to come onboard why not just say we don't have a scholarship slot open, but we've got this big juicy NIL deal that will let you pay your own way."

Even if it was, you couldn't stop an athlete from renting an apartment or buying dinner with their NIL money. The Genie is out of the bottle, now we get to see how far it goes.

Yes. You can't take a recruited player as a walk-on. Once he has been visited by coaches, taken visits, etc., he's a recruited player.

Why wouldn't he go somewhere else with a full scholarship AND a juicy NIL deal?

DO WALK-ONS GET A SCHOLARSHIP?
Walk-ons do not get athletic scholarships. Despite not receiving any athletic money, walk-ons are often the backbone of a great football team. Think about it this way: D1 FBS teams can give full-ride scholarships to 85 athletes on their roster. However, most FBS D1 teams will have 118-130 student-athletes on their roster, and those additional spots on the team are filled by talented walk-ons. Learn more about being a walk-on.

Just saying....

Not sure how that would work in football.

In baseball, Dylan Crews was never on scholarship after NIL. He declined and used NIL to pay his way.

Long time avid lurker, seldom ever post. The topic in this forum hits on some of the problems with NIL and the SC Justice Rehnquist ruling that made NIL possible. He all but forbid the NCAA from setting standards. Therefore, different states have passed laws making something in one state legal and the same inducement in another state illegal. Thus, the call for congressional action (God help us!). One of the first NIL deals was a fitness club in Miami paying all football players at Miami to wear his tee shirt, etc. Within a couple of days of NIL being legalized a donor out west offered to pay the equivalent of a full scholarship to 30+, walkons at BYU which is exactly what the author of the thread is asking and Saban has warned would happen. I don't know if the BYU donor's offer came to fruition or not.
The solution will eventually be some type of interstate commerce decision/law and I believe it will include collective bargaining and employment.

You can only bring 70 on the road in SEC games. Can you imagine paying 55 kids that don’t even travel?

I don't know how much a full boat athletic scholarship is, but it's a lot. Tuition, room and board, stipends, some travel maybe and who knows what else. Since this is income, would also have to reimburse taxes--more than the tax bill because reimbursing taxes is income too. I don't know if this is earned or unearned income, but possible social security costs too. Now add in some extra money so they can actually pocket some money too.

Add all this up and the 86+ (walkons) are making substantial NIL money, more than most of the scholarship players. Those scholarship players would have a righteous demand for their NIL money to match or exceed the walkons. You say that the money is to pay for their school. They would reply it's not their problem they aren't good enough to be on scholarship.

While there may be an occasional exception because of circumstances, I cannot ever imagine this as policy. This said, I do believe walkons should get some money.

Doesn't vandy recruit new classes every year in baseball and then if you make it to year two they move you to academic scholarship? I think there are rules against that type of thing in football, right? But are walk-ons not allowed any scholarship money? Like academic money? How does TOPS work with them?

You can’t add 40 football scholarships without adding the same number of womens sports scholarships because of Title IX.

If you could put higher profile players not on scholarship and just give them a bunch of NIL it would have been done by now years into all this.

Fact is if you want to promise someone $500k and no scholarship there's a handful of other teams out there likely willing to match that $500k and put them on scholarship.

Also isnt there some rules on certain activities scholarship athletes can do where as walk ons cant? Not sure if thats true but something to think about as well.

As someone else brought up travel rosters are very limited under the 85 scholarship limit. So even if you have effectively 100 scholarship players where 15 of them are just on a bunch of NIL as walk ons you can only travel with a lot less than that to road games.

Frankly 85 scholarships seems like too much to start with in FBS football. You have so many kids sit and transfer. FCS seems a bit more right with 63 scholarships. IF there was maybe 70-ish range in FBS it might not cause as much of a shite show in the portal.

They can, you just have a limited total roster size you can travel with.
