Your post is spot on, but not every home barista is looking for perfection. You can pull shots that are better than most cafes/restaurants with a $1,000 setup and I think that’s what most people are looking for.

I agree completely.

The Profitec Go is a good machine under $1k that has accurate temperature control and a good set of features.

Really like that one. Hoping my Legato can pass as a budget Profitec Go. I’ll have to share my setup and results when it comes in.

What kind of grinder are you using for your setup?

Turin Legato

That's a lot of machine for the price on paper. It's apparently Chinese and sold under private label in different markets. But it doesn't matter to me where it's made if it is made well and performs well. Very interesting.

I just saw on the interwebs that the first container of these machines just arrived in the States, and will be shipping soon.

Seriously, let us know how it goes.

Such a loaded topic, so I’ll just talk on what I have…

Gaggia Classic Pro with a Niche Zero grinder. To sum up, investing in a solid grinder like the Niche Zero made the rest of my process so much more fluid and easy.

Gaggia Classic Pro is a solid machine for the price, but took quite a learning curve with temperate surfing, etc. I don’t have any upgrades, but have learned how to make great espresso. As for steaming milk, it has some limitations there along eith a separate learning curve . For one, I suck a steaming milk, but have made strides improving. It gets the job done and I don’t need perfection. Overall, the espresso quality is great but there is a good bit of learning how to use the machine. You can’t just turn it on, let it heat up, and brew espresso. Edit…I did make two small upgrades buying a VST 18gram basket and Normcore spring loaded tamper. Both are pretty essential minor upgrades. I haven’t changed out the portafilter or performed any mods - maybe in the future…

For the grinder, the Niche Zero is a tank and I love this thing. Minimal fines and retention. It’s a breeze using. For home use, I don’t really need a large hopper as I weigh out coffee each grind. Highly highly recommend this grinder. I was remember hopping between this and the DF64 mentioned earlier. Very similar grinders, I think the DF64 is just more budget friendly with certain mods needed to even out with the Niche. Both good options but def recommend the Niche, even if it puts you over budget.

Nice. Local shop near me that makes incredible espresso uses a Niche.

The Niche and DF64 differ in the burrs. Niche uses conical, DF64 uses flat. Supposedly, conical burrs excel at traditional chocolately/sweet espresso. Flat burrs excel at providing clarity you’d want to highlight in a lighter roast. The Niche is a higher quality grinder and is easier to live with.

I went through temp surfing on the Gaggia. Installing the PID changed everything as I did trial and error until I found the perfect temp for the bean I have. Every bean is different and being able to adjust the temperature incrementally was the shite.

Also being able to set the steam temp and control everything from the PID instead of the cradle switch was fantastic (I only use the switch to flush the steam wand).

Yep. All of the features are what drew me in. I’ll post up when I get it. Hoping to have it within the next couple of weeks.

Breville Barista Express for $700. You can decide in the future if you want to go $3k-$5k on a legit machine. That being said, the Breville Barista Express is excellent for the price. Very popular product so if you have questions they are much easier to answer online.

The Breville Bambino is great if you want to purchase your own grinder. I'm not familiar on the grinders but from what I've heard, almost any conical burr grinder $200+ will do fine.

Yep, now I need to see if Mrs Perm wants to use it. If she does then I’ll have to go with one of those super automatic machines. If not, I’ll grab a nice grinder and traditional machine.

Mrs Perm puts so much creamer, Milk and sugar in that shite that it’s no longer coffee. Most days I pop a caffeine pill or grab an energy drink. Went to a fancy coffee bar in Miami and got a double shot of espresso. They gave me seltzer water and all. I was hooked.

You will need to throw those CC beans in the trash after you upgrade.
