Back house gets paid very handsomely to do their jobs....the servers/waitstaff have to split the tips with bar tenders, bus boys, and most front house staff

The business model of restaurants is flawed. when you can legally pay the front $2/hour, and they do a lot of work, and you pay the back $10+ to stand around 1/2 the time. The restaurant only has to pay the minumum wage if the front person got no tips. If no one tipped, the restaurants would have to pay everyone the same.

my kids worked food service for many years (on still does) and most of the time didn't even cash the whopping $15 check for 2 weeks of work. The restaurant paid $15 for 2 weeks of work, and expected YOU (customer) to make up the difference, and artifically deflate the food prices

no other industry works off of that BS model

I'm an awful person because I don't want to give away the money that I earned.

Got it.

Yes. People that work to earn a tip deserve some of that money. Just because it's out of town doesn't mean they don't need a tip. That's just you being a cheap a-hole and a coward that knows you won't get called out for being a cheap a-hole because you'll never see that person again. You are the worst type of person.

If they don’t make enough money they can quit. The server doesn't "deserve" shite from me. The only thing the restaurant deserves from me is to pay my bill.

Please keep in mind that I haven't said a rude word to anyone while you have been vile to me over and over again. Who is the a-hole here?

Or don’t be a pussy and just don’t tip. Unless you’re afraid of feeling awkward with the neckbeard or shim serving you

Hahahaha

Words are fine. Go talk to your boss for money. Don't come begging to me.

That’s fine if you don’t want to tip.

The restaurant will just increase the prices of your meal to cover the labor cost if they have to pay their servers more per hour.

Either way, you’re a piece of shite, or you’re going to pay one way or another.

Given the the fact you’re a 40 something year old single and lives alone and the way your gumbo looks tells me all I need to know about you.

So why not make both persons pay not tip dependent?

I agree. But we are discussing the present state. And waiters make below minimum wage, which is only legal due to tips. The person unloading lumber makes a wage at or above minimum wage and thus not dependent on tips.

I would be happy if this situation would change, but it's so ingrained in our culture and economy that I'm not sure it can.

So like every other business. Sounds much better than the current bullshite social credit score model.

It's pretty great tbh, and my gumbo has vastly improved in the last 12 years.

I weekly gets eyes rolled at a 7-8 dollar tip on a 50 dollar bill. If you don't leave 20 bucks on a 100 dollar bill you are likely to be called out.

Well yea, that's 20 percent of 100... wtf are you doing tipping less routinely?

You should just stop going out to eat. Seriously.

I used to wait tables and bartend to put myself through college, and after a while it was easy to spot people like you before you even ordered anything.

You wonder why you get shitty service everywhere you go? Look in the mirror.

Meanwhile I couldn't tell you the last time I've had shitty service anywhere I've went. Maybe it's because I waited tables and understand how customers can come off to wait staff from the very first interaction. I always tip well because I know what it's like to make $2.35 an hour and depend on tips for a large part of your pay - and before you say "that's the restaurants problem! They should pay more!", that also means it's not that particular waiter's problem either. If you think waiters and waitresses should be paid more and think you're making your point by leaving shitty tips, just stop going.

You're stiffing the wait staff and not proving anything to the restaurant owners when you try to make a point that they should be paid more by leaving a shitty tip. You're screwing the point-of-service and not the ownership.

And I promise you, the waiters and waitresses know exactly who you are from the moment they start waiting on you, even if you've never been there before. They've seen miserable cheap asses like you a million times and can spot one a mile away.

I spent many years in the restaurant industry and this is 100% true. Honestly I still treated the customers good but it’s a gut feeling and almost 100% of the time your gut is telling you the truth. Even almost prior to first words spoken, you can tell if it’s gonna be a cheapskate or prick right away.

I own restaurants and this thread is hilarious.

Everyone ITT bitching about tipping would be the same sorry arse motherfrickers bitching if the bill included tip already and all you had to do was get up and leave. I swear you could give shite away to these people and they’d still find something to be an arse about. I know because I include 20% on all my checks in one of my restaurants and tell patrons constantly it’s included. 90% of everyone is fine with it but boy that 90% most boomer men sure do love to get all hot and bothered over it.
