he didn’t? He did a good job considering last year. We weren’t a good defense. This year we were bad. Even for what he had we sucked.

That’s nonsense.

It was year 1 and the entire team team was a mess. He put together a secondary w duct tape and glue, turned Perkins intro a Fr AA, the whole LB unit was strong, DL was stout (just lacked depth after starters) and we won 10 games.

10 games! When frankly we needed the D bigly in a lot of those. JD5 was a fraction of the player he was this season, several games w awful stat lines (like Ark, AUB). Boutte straight up sucked, people were calling for JD and KB (and denbrock) to get replaced.

Look you can revisionist history 22 all you want because 23 was so bad but you’re only fooling yourself. In 2022 Matt House did a good job, full stop.

Should that matter moving forward? Maybe, maybe not. But given what he did in 22 and at Kentucky it’s reasonable to think he CAN turn it around.

If it could go wrong, it did. All in the same year.

This is not a defense of House. The way house dealt with these problems was inexcusable this year.

I think people correctly wanted him rushing the passer more on 3rd and long situations. That’s where we really missed what he did last season compared to this year. All the other stuff you posted is legit, he was still good but we missed that pass rush due to Houses misuse of him in certain situations.

He's had two years and the defense has gone backwards. I can't name one defensive player that has improved over that period and that comes down to coaching. It would be one thing if we were heading in the right direction, but it's become a complete dumpster fire and an embarrassment!

I also don't think the players believe in the coaching staff. There is no reason we should find ourselves in this position. We need a better, completely new defensive staff to coach these players and get us back on track.

At this point, our defense doesn't even have a pulse and is DOA!

Bama, USC, Ole Miss, UCLA, OU, at SCAR, at ARK, at A&M, at UF

Most certainly not easier.

Wrong.... just watch the A&M tape... the D took over the game and played their asses off the last half. They obviously believe in each other enough, and have not lost the competitive fire that would come from not believing in the staff.

Based of the way that they made PERKINS a NON-FACTOR - if for no other reason, fire him for this.

No, I think he's done. Like I've said, not all his fault, but you can't have a defense that bad and come back.

USC and UCLA are both bad teams, so are ARK, UF, SCAR, and maybe atm. The two toughest teams we play (Bama & Ole Miss) are at home.

It is ABSOLUTLEY easier. Easy? No. But it's not worse than last year.

I think this is likely.

Maybe his scheme works well with more senior players, but I'm not confident he can get inexperienced players to play fast without overthinking and out of position.

I think this is probably right as well. I think Kelly still probably thinks House has a good football mind, but I don't think he's a great communicator to either his assistant coaches or to younger players. What's in his head isn't translating tothe field for whatever reason. And with the yearly roster turnover in today's college football, I think that's a skill you absolutely have to have.

True. Not arguing against how bad 23 was, just pushing back on 22 being characterized as much worse than it actually was.

Wingo, Sage Ryan, Swinson you could argue but no not a lot.

Also it's not the DCs fault this team is completley lacking of development and funamentals (lining up out of position, tackling, lane integrity, hand position, etc.) this falls on position coaches mostly. Ding him for LBs if you want, that's his position, but Weeks was a brighspot.

Look at how good the offensive coaching is at every level (sloan, Hankton, Frank, Davis) and it's obvoius why they're elite at every level. None of the position guys on the defense are that good. If you want to give Lindsey a pass I can get behind that.

I also don't think the players believe in the coaching staff

Based on what? I'd love to see your evidence suggesting this is true.

-I believe in Brian Kelly, he knows what a good DC looks like, been solid his whole career in this respect.
-Last years schedule was much tougher than next years (4 teams that finished top 12 AWAY from home)
-perfect shite storm with none of the DB transfers working out (except Zy, hurt), unlikely to happen again.
-No DL coach last year, won’t happen again.
-Will almost certainly end up with more talent & experience on that side of the ball next year.
-House did a really solid job in 22, didn’t forget how to coach football.

I’m not saying he will (or should be) retained, again I have faith in CBK, but if he is it’s not hard to be reasonably optimistic about a big turnaround.

well put... agree

The only reason Kelly will bring him back is if he is convinced all the injuries caused the decline.
