American Woodcock. I have them in my backyard sometimes. Their numbers are sadly declining mainly due to habitat destruction.

not destruction but less favorable timber practices, feral cats and obstacles.

was scouting duck flight at one of me potential monday spots - saw a dozen or so - then about a thousand whistlers after dark

What's sad is the Northern Bobwhite Quail may become extinct in the wild during my lifetime. They used to be all over the place in SELA, but I cannot remember the last time I flushed a covey.

Becasse, killed many of them. Got a questionaire in the mail many years ago. W&F wanted me to send in the wings. That was the time I quit hunting them and did not participate. The females are bigger than the males.

I watched some wildlife biologists and students stand on the levee at Sherbourne catch them with huge dip nets at dusk years back. I don’t remember what exactly was the outcome but that was the purpose of the study was to track migration

I have a healthy population of wild quail on my property in South Ga. I’ve never hunted them but they love hanging around the deer feeders

About 10 years ago or so, my brother-in-law had a nice camp on some property southeast of Rayne with a nice pond and cabin tucked up against some woods. He was telling me how many woodcocks he had there and that at dusk they would fly right at you if you had a bonfire going. I thought he was full of shite, but one afternoon we were out there and he proved it to me.

We made a fire in his fire pit on the side of the camp about a half hour before sundown and drank some beer waiting by the pit with our shotguns. Suddenly, one or two woodcocks come flying out of the woods about 50 yards away headed right at us. We grabbed our guns and started shooting. I’m not shitting you, for the next 5 or 10 minutes they just kept on coming at us like fricking Kamikazes. We couldn’t load our guns fast enough. We were laughing our asses off and just shooting as fast as we could. We probably missed as many as we killed, but we killed a bunch. It was crazy.
