I remember the year the “eye test” was born…That year a team that did not win its division and did not qualify to play in its championship game was gifted a spot in the national championship game. The methodology always seems to resurface when it is advantageous to the Gumps.

The committee felt compelled to have an SEC team included. Hell, that's probably the reason UGA was #1, it sure wasn't how they played for half the season.

When Bama beat them, Bama got the SEC's unofficial auto-bid. But because Texas beat them decisively in Tuscaloosa, they then HAD to take Texas, too. Otherwise the favoritism would be too obvious.
So, that meant somebody had to go. Wouldn't be Michigan, they were untouchable. Obvious, from the way the cheating scandals were handled. Big 10 was all-in, and they'd have broken the arrangement somehow.
Washington or Fla State...
Washington has the feel-good "last hurrah for the Pac 12" storyline. Fla State lost their starting QB- hey, that's the ticket. That's why 2 one-loss teams are better than them, after having not been all season long.
