You get a message saying that someone sent you money by accident and asks for you to send it back. When you send it back the money that you received doesn't clear, and the transaction is cancelled. You are then out the money that you sent back. At least this is how a lot of scams work with bad checks or pending wires. Don't know if it would work with venmo, but it's what I would be looking for.
