Is all this really necessary to check my tranny fluid and add the stuff you mentioned above?
Checking the transmission fluid in the 2015 Ford F-150 is not very convenient. Most automakers, including Ford have done away with the traditional dipstick and You have to lift the vehicle in the air to check the fluid. The truck has to be lifted, level and the fluid be at operating temperature to get an accurate reading. Once the truck is lifted, the skid plate needs to be removed from under the transmission, it is held in with camlocks. On the passenger side of the transmission is the dipstick, just behind the front tire. Using a 19mm wrench, loosen and remove it. The dipstick is only about 4 inches long, make sure the fluid is within the operating range.

Oh yeah. They have pretty much screwed the home mechanic. I also heard that there is about a 100% chance you get burned when checking it because of all the equipment around the dipstick.

I have a 2013 5.0 and had the valve body issue mentioned earlier back in March/April. Brought it to a dealership and got it diagnosed but they said the part they needed could take months to come in. Ended up at a transmission shop and the owner knew the exact issue. Said the part the dealer wanted to change was basically like putting a bandaid on it. They fixed the issue, around a $2000 fix and it’s been fine since.

So just a quick update. Brought my truck into shop today. Mechanic rode with me and within a minute he knew it was the torque converter. Said that if we drop pan, change fluid, and add some of that additive mentioned previously, there is a 99% chance it will go away.
Also, for all the ones saying that Fords seem to have all the issues, the mechanic said Chevy/GMC are by far the worst on the transmission front. Said he's had to work on close to 800 of them.
