Anyone ever experience this?

I’m really going nuts. Not diagnosed by the vet even though I’ve told them the symptoms multiple times.

No one else seems concerned (vet or trainer) but I’m very concerned the dog is going to eat something that gets it killed. Seems compulsive and it very rarely listens to any commands when it has its mind set on something.

I read the underlying causes and clue what one is causing it. Vet says diet is good. And this often happens during play so I don’t think it’s boredom. It could still be teething but it should be pretty much done with teething by now.

The most consistent thing it goes after is plastic. Ok, that’s weird and annoying and still dangerous. But I’m most concerned with rocks. It’s definitely tried to chew on bricks before and it often (tries) to eat rocks, especially when we are out on walks or playing.

At the very least it’s going to break its teeth.

No issues so far from the dog getting sick but I’m concerned it’s only a matter of time.

I have a puppy (6 months) that plays with rocks, she "chews" them and throws them up in the air and chases them but I am more concerned with the fact she chewed into an extension cord last night and tried to fry herself. I have had dogs all my life and this is the first one to chew into a power cord. I also thought I had heard every sound a dog could make but it was a completely new barkscreamwhine. The rest of the pack were looking at me like "bruh you gotta take care of that".

She is fine BTW.

My dog has eaten dirt all her life. The frequency/volume has increased as she has aged. Only way i can prevent it is keeping her from going outside which is not really possible. The vet's lack of concern hasnt changed even though I bring it up frequently. Diet and blood work is fine.

She used to chew on rocks and eat rotting sticks, acorns, and rotting pecans. It has always worried me but she is 14 now and shown no ill effects.

I try to discourage it, but fairly ineffectual. If the dog is young enough perhaps you could train it out with persistence.

I had a small terrier that I adopted from the pound. She was perfect behavior wise. A year later I had to take her to the vet because it seemed that one of the three rotten teeth was causing her pain. She leaves the vet looking much better and the vet told me what he had to do. It seemed that the majority of her teeth were decayed and he pulled every tooth out of her mouth. After a couple of weeks she was doing fine and she started to eat her dried dog food. Apparently her gums toughen up and she lived a normal life. After she died I went to a breeder and purchased a very small dog. She was a great purchase who would go in a room to be by herself. She didn't like company and I would tell my friends to leave her alone because she wasn't the type of dog who likes company. Now here is something that was unusual. She quit walking and spent her time in the dog bed. I brought her to two vets and they showed me her XRays. Nothing was wrong with her. I always had to carry her outside to do her business. I had no problem carrying her in or out. I would do it all over again. Two weeks ago I had to have a dog put down because she had cancer.

Nature is soon to remove your dog from the gene pool.

It kind of weirds me out that you keep referring to your dog as “it” in your post

My lab was the same as a puppy. Picked up rocks in the flower bed, rolled them around in her mouth. She grew out of it.

Next best thing: buy pet insurance now, as gastro or dental surgeries are likely in the near future.

I had to come back to this thread. I just took my dogs out for poop time and noticed the puppy went in early. I didn't think anything about it but when we got back inside she was on her bed chewing up a paper towel, I put up my late-night snack bowl but forgot my "napkin" but she didn't. As I approached her she knew I was going to take it and swallowed a big chunk before I could get there.

I think she learned it from one of my older dogs, anytime I have a food wrapper and put it down on the side table instead of taking back to the kitchen garbage he will ask to go outside then as soon as I open the door to come back in he streaks to my chair and grabs the wrapper with the ha ha fooled you look on his face.

My dog was obsessed with eating paper towels and napkins.Anytime she could snatch one she would gulp it down before I could get it away from her.

Way I broke her of it was to it sew a white thread through a napkin and tie it to the trigger of a mouse trap. After she grabbed two booby trapped napkins, she lost interest in them.

Several times I would run over a dried up napkin turd with the lawn mower and paper fragments would go everywhere.

Neighbors black lab would eat everything. It would crap out a treasure chest. Sprinkler head chunks, rocks, stuffed animal parts, golf ball pieces, coins. Dog lived a full life.
