As much as the dude pisses me off by not finishing the main story, I just can't get enough of the world he created. So, if you love ASOIAF world and lore, I think it's a good read. It does read like a history text book, though. Also, the show is only one portion of the book.
One part of reading the book again before the show started, I appreciated some of the vague or hinted at parts of the book that they answered in the show.
