I've always thought that unions were one of the things that prevented a real struggle between communism and capitalism in our country. Union members tend to be pretty conservative on many social issues. They just want their piece of the pie.

Back before they came about, things like sweat shops, company stores, scrip, child labor, etc were causing real divisions.

I think a relative balance between unions and companies, along with a free press are some of the things that make us unique.

Are they free from corruption? No. But then again, neither are businesses. Heck, all you have to do is read about the old captains of industry. And it exists down to the small entrepreneurs. It's human nature. It's like the old saying about watching sausage being made.
