Guy Pierce--L.A. Confidential, Memento, then ?

Cybil Sheppard--yes she had some big roles (The Last Picture Show, Taxi Driver, Moonlighting) but at her peak she was drop dead gorgeous. She could have been from 1975 to 1985 what Faye Dunaway was from 1967 to 1977.

Gabriel Byrne-again big name, some big roles but he kind of disappeared after The Usual Suspects.

Andy Garcia--See Gabriel Byrne only substitute The Godfather Part III for The Usual Suspects.

Cleavon Little-partly because he focused more on Broadway than movies or television and partly because he died fairly young but how can you knock the role of the black sheriff out of the park in Blazing Saddles and do nothing else anyone remembers on the screen?

He was in Bosom Buddies with Tom Hanks.

Last thing I saw him in was Evil on CBS as the Monsignor.

That's crazy. I'd forgotten about him being in Bosom Buddies.

Newhart was so good. It changed so much over the years, and really developed its characters- the yuppies, the Daryls, that big lummox maintenance guy...

The opening credits and the Henry Mancini theme song felt like something out of the 1960s, in a good way. No saxophones or synth brass in that.

He's practically unrecognizable thanks to some bad, bad plastic surgery. I'm pretty sure ol' boy is in denial something fierce about being a queer.

Jennifer Jason Leigh probably qualifies. She seems to be in something good every 5-10 years but never really had anything huge. She did one Coen brothers film, I think... guess they didn't like her?

FWIW I liked Existenz a lot better than The Matrix. I didn't like Fast Times all that much.

Her dad died making a big-budget movie so there may be some aversion to them in her.

And like a lot of actors in this thread, she never stopped doing really good work. She just never "broke through" from a mass-market standpoint. Had to ask for alimony in her divorce.

I was so disappointed after Kirk Lazarus and Tugg Speedman lost their early magic. They were just spent after that war movie, I guess.

Josh Hartnett

As has been pointed out more than once in this thread, Josh Hartnett deliberately took a step back because he didn't want to be a big star. I get the feeling the man enjoys his privacy and didn't want to be mobbed by teen girls every where he went.

Idris Elba's career took a major hit from the abysmal Gunslinger movie. Which was unfortunately not fault of his own.

Though they have both had leading roles in very successful TV shows, I never understood why Kyle Chandler and Timothy Olyphant never made it to true A List star status. They are both very good actors IMHO.

I had no idea Vic Morrow was her dad. For those of you who don't know who he is. He was the guy who was decapitated by a helicopter prop while filming Twilight Zone in the 80's.

Ben Foster is one of the most underrated actors of all time

20 years ago I thought Ben Foster was an Oscar-caliber actor. Sucks he never became bigger.

Saw Mark Strong in a couple of movies in the early 2000s and thought he'd be a big leading man soon. Good looks, great voice and presence. He's done a lot of work but not a lot of leading roles.

He makes too good of a villain.

I’d say Emile Hirsch, but I think that has a lot or do with his off screen antics or whatever.

Rush was pretty great.
Rush really is a great movie, and , in my mind, his best role. Very realistic for the 70's, when outlaws were still outlaws.

He, Wes Studi and Robert Duval were great in Geronimo: An American Legend.

Was good in, and a big part of, Sleepers. Too me he disappeared after that.

Guys like Ben Foster are great actors first and will never be stars.
Yes, he would have been a big star back in the 40's or 50's when people didn't expect everyone in Hollywood to look perfect. No way Humphrey Bogart would have become a star if he'd started his career in the 70's or since.

Why shouldn't everyone look perfect when most of the posters on the OT board want their wives to look like porn stars.

Julia Stiles
I never thought she was a good enough actress to be in the Bourne movies. She seems like the boring person her character is in the movies. Never found her desirable either.
