Who the hell do you think wrote the warrant that was signed by the judge?

Liberty Safes should have told the Feds that unless they (Liberty Safes) are served with a court order to supply the Feds with an access code to just pound sand, and then gone to court to fight the order. They owe the Feds nothing.

Let's agree that the Feds have a warrant to search the premises served on the homeowner (or renter). That warrant is not served on Liberty Safes, which legally owes no assistance to the Feds. Nobody is saying the Feds can't gain access, but that is NOT the business of Liberty Safes. Period.

Dude probably should've changed the "master" code and not given it to Liberty.

SEARCH WARRANT

The bigger problem is judges granting search warrants for fishing expeditions. Now that Liberty and likely others are exposed, we know to buy mechanical safes that can't be opened by the mf (your choice on the abbreviation, manufacturer or...).

So what was the justification? Did he hold an FJB sign? Or one that said FREEDOM, or what? Or, OMG, he made a mean tweet back in 2020? Or did the FBI get a call from one of their often non-existent, always anonymous or name-redacted, "proven reliable in the past" tipsters?

Oh, and Liberty's "reasonable consumer privacy protections." What arrogance. Who are they to decide which privacy protections are reasonable? The Right to Privacy is just that. They can take a giant leap into hell right along with the federal law enforcement agency we once, long, long ago, respected.

When I was a cop I had to contact two or three manufacturers because the owners locked themselves out for whatever reason.

Usually it was owned by a parent that later died and the kids needed to get into the safe. I’ve done it for several different brands and they all had a bypass.

Why not call a locksmith.

How about Liberty should not have provided access unless ordered by a court to do so OR at the request of the owner of the safe?

That's their decision, not mine. They have to deal with those consequences. I do not.

But, the dude had complete control over who accessed that safe, did he not?

Up to the point that Liberty provided the access code to the FBI...

I am not certain if an owner can easily change the access code to the safe...

This is why all mine are mechanical dials... Never trusted the digital crap...

No he did not. That's the whole point. Once Liberty gave the Gestapo the codes, he lost "complete control over who accessed that safe."

I need a safe but I refuse to buy a keypad safe. i want a dial safe. I wonder if this is true for a dial safe? Is there a code that would open the dial safe.

Wouldn't the owner be obligated to open the safe with the warrant?
If there is a warrant I don't see how companies can resist this sort of stuff. But you would think a company would force the issue and say "it is not our property, we can't give you access to somebody elses property" and see what happens.

Is Apple compelled to unlock phones for law enforcement now? I remember they resisted for awhile.

Tell them to write “found a safe“ in their search warrant results and other than that go frick themselves.

were they served in the warrent? If not, then they had no say. And we all know the safe was not named on this fishing expedition, let alone the mfgr

There is no legal reason for Liberty to cooperate. At most they should ask the purchaser of their product if they wish to have the authorities gain access. If not they would then demand court ordered action to go any further.
