We are looking to take our family skiing next year. That includes our grandchildren who will be 7 1/2 at that time. We would prefer to go to Colorado just from the ease of flying from Louisiana. Any suggestions on ski resorts that would be great for young children to learn as well as provide fun for the entire family.

Sounds like Breckenridge to me. I’d look for lodging on/around peak 8. Look into Main Street Station.

When ours were that young we would take them to the Arrabelle Hotel in Vail. Eagle airport is close by. The lift is 50 feet from the hotel door. There’s other activities such as ice skating and tubing. The concierge service for holding your equipment is great and the kids ski school was great.
We live in Florida so we would rent the ski clothes rather than buy them since the kids would outgrow them by the next year.
I like the area surrounding Vail because of the ease to get around.

Breckenridge. Use Peak 8 or 9 to schedule ski lessons. Have a blast.

I know you said you prefer Colorado, but you should definitely consider Park City / Deer Valley in Utah. Less than an hour drive from SLC airport. Can stay in Park City and ski either resort. Much lower elevation than the Colorado resorts, so fewer elevation sickness symptoms to worry about. Also, Deer Valley doesn't allow snowboarders, which is a major plus if everyone in your party are skiers. We used to go to Colorado religiously until we tried Utah and now we go there pretty much every season. My $.02.

Yeah, if transportation convenience is important Colorado isn’t easier than Park City

Thanks for the thoughts. We were primarily thinking of fight time but will go back and include Park City / Deer Valley.

Purgatory in Durango is another option. Really good setup for kids/beginners. There's a couple of short lifts that are great for learning.

Crested Butte, hands down. My kids grew up skiing at CB (they are all over 29 now). I've skiied just about every mountain in Colorado and skiied CB over 20 times. Great mountain for kids and great mountain for advanced skiiers. Extreme skiing was invented in CB. Plus the crowds are significantly less in CB. Denver crowd has a hard time getting there. Denver crowd can get down I-70 to Keystone, Vail, Breckenridge, Copper, Beaver Creak, etc., in no time. Better snow in CB, better prices in CB, better restaurants in CB and a kid friendly mountain. Fly American, Delta or United into Gunnison or fly Southwest into Montrose. A little farther drive from Montrose, but only about 30 minutes from Gunnison. We take the shuttle from Gunnison airport to Mt Crested Butte and rarely rent a car. We also drove Spring Break from Waco and it is about a 13 hour drive (12 hours from Dallas). CB is also great during the summer. Let me know if you need more information. The I-70 ski resorts are too crowded. Steamboat is also an option, you fly into Yampa Valley Airport, about 30 minutes away. Steamboat is also hard to get to from Denver, hence less crowds. That is important with young skiiers.

Budget a concern? All the I-70 mentioned are great as are the Utah resorts.

I’d would have trouble spending that kind of money on a trip with young skiers and may opt for one of the smaller resorts like Cooper or Loveland.

Have fun!

Park City or Breck would be about even at the top of my family-trip list for travel convenience, skiing variety, and non-skiing activities. Both have real towns and plenty of lodging options for different price levels. Easy to get around and lots of families. Other places may be better for pure skiing, but with a family you need a more rounded destination.

Not Colorado but why not consider Park City? Awesome skiing, easy flight into SLC, 45 minute drive, and the town is great.

I find flight prices to be a bit higher to Slc over Denver but it’s super convenient to be 20-30 min drive from your destination (Slc-park city).

Is there a specific place you recommend to stay at in Crested Butte or do you just VRBO it?

On a budget I would go with Keystone, lift tickets are very affortable if you get Epic Day passes. I took my nieces there, their lift tickets were aournd $40 a day so if they only wanted to ski a few hours it wasn't a big deal. It is a really nice mountian for new skiers, advanced skiers not as much.

If budget isn't much of an option than I would go with Beaver Creek or Dear Valley. Beaver Creek has very light crowds, lots of good runs for new skiers and the mountain is easy to navigate. DV is very similar, easy to get to from SLC.
