The nameplate in that photo uses a serif font. With the exception of a period in the early to mid 1980s, LSU hasn’t used a serif font on its football jersey nameplates. They went to another sans serif font for nameplates beginning in 1986.

I don’t think LSU started using names in the back until 1972, which was Casanova’s rookie year in Cincinnati. They did not have names on the back in the 1971 Notre Dame-LSU game, and Casanova played in that game.

I like the purple jerseys. I don't like the purple jerseys with the gold pants though.

purple jerseys

we rarely wear them

The two phrases are related. We rarely wear them because of ample empirical evidence that we rarely were able to win meaningful games in them.

Not at home. Back in the olden days we wore them to away games.

There are several things wrong with the era of the jersey:

1. Name would be on a separate placard sewn on the the jersey.

2. Striping would extend on the shoulders.

3. Bottom of the sleeves would be ribbed and striped.

There are several things pertaining to the workmanship that are amiss:

1. The #3 is applied to the jersey at a slight angle (view distance between the 3 and 7 at the top and bottom.

2. The centering is off, notice the #3 extends into the shoulder stripping and the #7 is totally within the shoulder stripping.

3. The name is applied off-center, notice the distance from the stripping of the C and the last A.

Other than that, good effort on a knock-off jersey.

Tommy Casanova became an opthamologist in New Orleans, and was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1995 (one term), in addition to his football career.

Casanova... is a mensch.

Jesus Christ. Where do y’all come up with all of these fashion terms. I’ve never heard of half the shot that’s said on this site when it come s to jersey’s. I thought I’d heard it all but now we have “serif font”

come on, man. "Serif font" isn't a fashion term, it's the font - a style of letter.

Do you ever compose a document on a computer? If so, you do realize you have dozens of font choices, right?

Also, every Tiger fan knows we now use the "geaux font." So none of this should be a surprise.

I can only remember a couple of reasons LSU ever wore purple jerseys before the NCAA came up with the ridiculous ruling that forced LSU to wear them at home.

At one point, Kentucky used to force LSU to wear purple for games in Lexington, but I don't think LSU played there in Tommy's years.

The other time was when LSU played at Georgia Tech many years ago, because Tech also wears white jerseys at home. Jerry Stovall returned a kickoff for a touchdown, to tell you how long ago that was.

Wearing the purple jerseys was so rare, the equipment guys used to line up and take the purple jerseys from the players as soon as they walked off the field after the Spring game, to keep the players from taking them as sort of a collector's item.

Urine idiot

A “serif” is the little horizontal bar on the letters.

“Sans” or “sans serif” means “without serifs”

“Arial” is a sans serif font
“Times New Roman” is a serif font
“Garamond” (my personal favorite) is a serif font

You probably wrote your emails in comic sans. Aka “comic book font with out serifs”.

Educate yourself. Seriously. It’s a big world out there maybe try to pick up some knowledge along the way.

Pretty jersey but folks i think the main focus should be on the Autograph. People breaking down if its real or not is not the point here. I have several Autograph jerseys and i know they aren't real jerseys but having an Authentic Autograph is the main thing you worry about. I do like reading people's information on the history of the lsu jerseys though.

This jersey looks a little more legit, but from what I understand about the jersey signature market, the actual signature is what matters when it comes to these. You will likely not find an actual Tommy Casanova jersey, and definitely won't find it signed. It would be a knock off replica jersey, but with a legitimate signature.
